Don't know if anyone has posted this info, however if they did I could not find it. California John passed away Wed 11/5 from a heart attact. He was a good player who played at The Rack in Detroit during its heydays. Lately he has been repairing and building cues. He would sit and tell stories of the good old days for hours while he worked on the cues. I just found out today, called him and his wife told me the bad news. His obit will be in the Sunday paper here in Detroit.

If you could, please print the obituary for John. Thanks. Many years ago we did battle at the old Cue and Cushion.

No problem Jay, I will post it tomorrow, John and I use to play banks for $20 a game at the Rack back in the 70s. He was a good guy, had a cue shop in his garage, loved the game. Later in life he got a job in a factory and was a tool maker for several years before retiring. He will be missed around the Detroit area. One thing I remember about him is he always had good things to say about other cuemakers and people in general. If anyone has any stories about him, I am sure we would love to read them.

i played john many games of 10 ball in san antonio. he was there a few months in the late 70's or early 80's. good fella, fun to be around. i last saw him at the first Clyde Childress memorial tournament, he was there with Cornbread Red and some others from detroit. had fun playing him and have mentioned him to others many times over the years. i believe he said he was from northern california.

Another one bites the dust...

Steve Lomako, give John my regards at his wake. He and I had many formidable battles at The Rack. We always had fun playing each other--he didnt like to play safe. Didnt play bad either. I remember him busting Jimmy Reid at The Rack playing 1pkt, when Reid tried to play him 8 to 7 on that table next to the toilet. For those trying to recall him, he was built like a wall safe, with 3 foot shoulders.

the Beard

If I remember correctly, CornBread gave him the name, California Johnny because he went on a short road trip to CA. He was originally from Chicago, I believe
