California player question

Hi,

Seeing all of these posts about various players made me think about old times.

For those of you near San Diego, I was there maybe 6 or so years ago and went to a tournament at a place I can't remember, but thought it was one of the last tournaments there and that they were shutting down.

Anyway, I was a D player and drew KK first and got drilled, then drew someone named I think Baby Ray or something like that. Wonder if anyone knows how he plays compared to some other named people around the country (compare to anyone you can think of)

Ended up playing some guy 1 pocket for $50 a game (I played much better one pocket than 9 ball) and won a little. He wanted to go to somewhere else and I was not familiar with the area but I think it was Hollywood something. There was a Vip room and they said we just missed Kiefer Sutherland (this was well before 24 so it may have been closer to 10 years ago) Anyway surprise surprise the guy was laying down a bit, and we played for $100 a game and he whooped me pretty badly. It was a really nice pool hall with a 4 star restaurant in front and if I remember right it had a big fence around the parking lot and a convenience store across the street, the neighborhood seemed like it wasn't the best.

Thanks for any help.

"Baby Ray" Galavez. He was supposed to be a good player, but I never really saw him play nor did we ever play each other so I have no clue to his speed.

The pool room you speak of at the end of your post is Hollywood Billiards. It used to have a nice Italian resaurant named "Issima" (since closed for a sports bar). The poolroom is alive and well and I saw Kiefer there within the last 6 months (Max E. is friends with him). Kiefer used to frequent the old Hollywood Billiards on Hollywood & Western when I worked there (91').

I am curious who "KK" is?

You tell that no good, cotton pickin', S.O.B. Baby Ray that I said ...

Hi. :)

Or maybe I'll tell him in two weeks in Hollywood. Whatever.

baby ray and kk

i think KK might be king kong
and when i saw baby ray play at south bay billiards in the 90's
he played well enough to challenge dave hemmah and tang hoa
but that was long ago... havent seen baby ray play in years
even saw keith play back then... 352 club in hawthorne
Dave

Yes, you are correct KK= Chavez

There were some other not really famous actors that supposedly came in there but I can't remember.

I'm thinking about the same time I met Connie Rim (not the same as Alice)?

Baby Ray practices at House of Billiards in Santa Monica during the day. He also played and cashed in the Swanson Memorial Tournament a few weeks ago.

Didn't everyone cash at that tournament? I thought the spectators might have got money back. ;)

Baby Ray also practices at Mr Lucky's in Torrance in the afternoon and plays BCA team 8 ball on Wednesday night there.

Yes he played well at the Swanee (in the money) but not as well as Jimmy Mendoza (more money) who had to travel from AZ.

The trip FROM AZ wasn't bad. The trip home ... well that's another story. I didn't walk in my door until 8:30AM.
