Can Anyone In Chicago Bank A Lick?

Just a note to think about. I have heard (and heard and heard) about these great bank pool players from Chicago. I have been to every DCC and I have never seen any of these "great" players actually win. I did spend a little time while I was there and looked and it appear that the winners at the banks was from everyplace BUT Chicago.

I guess I still remember, the Bank Ring Games commentators saying that you can tell these guys dont know much about banks, how it should be played, yadda, yadda. Its on Youtube and listen, Brian wins, (and wins) and now John Brombeck wins this year at DCC. Danny Harriman won one. Larry won a couple, even Matlock won one.

How can Chicago be considered the Mecca for bank pool if nobody from there every wins?

Brombeck was awesome this year. He always looks tough, but this year, he was deadly.

Next you are going to tell us that Tony Fargo can't bank a lick either, as he has never won an event at the DCC.

No, but I guess my point wasnt clear.

I constantly hear about banks in Chicago, but it appears to me there are more bank players in Kentucky.

The other point that I was making was these guys (from Chicago) get touted as experts and on the Youtube the commentators are saying that Brian Gregg is shooting this wrong or you can tell he doesnt play, etc. I watched Brombeck, and Larry Nevel, and several others, that you were surprized if they MISSED.

You are right - I don't understand your point.

You are comparing ( I think) Chicago to Kentucky bank players -

You mention:
Brian Gregg - Indiana
John Brombeck - Kentucky
Larry Nevel - Wisconsin
Danny Harriman - Missouri
David Matlock - Kansas

Again, you are right - I don't understand your point, and still don't.

Your first post justified a great banker by their success at the DCC. Line all the DCC bank champions up and Tony Fargo will play them all some.

You are right - I don't understand your point.

And who are the YouTube commentators - are they known bank players themselves, knowledgable to comment if someone is shooting the right or wrong shot?

I quit evaluating pool players skills by how they performed and finished in tournaments, regardless of the venue, long ago.

Over time I finally realized that tournament finishes mean about nothing when it comes to figuring out who really is "the best".

I have virtually no knowledge of the Chicago scene whatsoever, but if people in the "know" are stating that it's the Mecca of Banks then I'm sure there is some substance to those accounts and I'd be willing to wager that any of the tournament proven champions from the DCC might be able to get themselves some action if they wanted to venture into the windy city and try.

Just my opinion folks, we're all entitled to our own of course. :)

I think the commentators were probably talking about the fact that there has always been some very strong bank players from Chicago. But, if you wanna find a long list of Bank players, you gotta figure Ky. is probably the place to look. Southern Ohio, around Dayton and Cincinnatti, the players always competed against the Ky. players. Matlock may be from Ok., but he's an overall great player. Same with Parica. He plays bank better than any of the Phillipino players.
I know what your point was in the thread, {how's come you never see Chicago guys winning the bank events} there are always Chicago bankers in the Action at DCC. That short race tourney, is just hard to come thru. And the ring game, we all know who the king of that action is.

being from KY i'm obviously a little biased, but the chicago bankers are obviously great. They might not be the very upper crust of the bank pool scene but still play very well.

I've not seen a single chicago banker that would play any of the following players even especially in full rack bank.

John Brumback
Brian Gregg
Shannon Daulton

Other less known players that play very tough
Brian Roberts
Nick Varner in his prime

Who are the living top bank players you refer to?

I will assume
Neil Jacobs
Piggy Banks
Ike Runnels

Speaking of Chicago....How about that Rod Blagojevich...Man...what a head of hair!

in the days when real banks were played full rack banks ky a chicago were the homes of great bankers truman to bugs with all were great now days even the average players play good banks from ky seems like banks have lost its luster anyplace but ky

Matlock

Many do not know, but David grew up in western Missouri, came to Kansas, went on down to Oklahoma (lived in Ponca City and Bartlesville and a couple of other cities down there) for years, and ended up in Olathe, Kansas where he lives today. I believe he got married and bought a house in Olathe.

I knew where he was born but figured I would give credit to Kansas as that is where he now resides.

Most players I don't know where they were born or grew up, just where they are from now, so I figure that is the best way to classify them.

Indiana has had many great bank players-
Mark Jarvis
Brian Gregg
Brian Groce
George Breedlove

Missouri
Danny Harriman
Rusty Brandemeyer
David Matlock (ok, glad to take credit for David)

Bankplayer how about further South? Is it just KY, and any idea why KY?

Thanks,

Ken

Jarvis is really from Chicago, grew up there, spent most of his adult life there. Also lived in Indiana in adult life.

Obvious you haven't heard of Bugs, Howard (died few years ago) John Zaksas, Piggy Banks, Ike, Neil, and the other 25-60 (maybe 20-40) that plays banks at a top level, banking 3's, 4's 5's and sometimes more routinely. Many will play banks as many hours per day that some play nine ball. Not all players play tournaments. Like someone said, bring the banking cash to Chicago--Chris' on north side, Red Shoes on the south side.

A little sidenote Mark Jarvis is a Chicago transplant. He lived in Chicago most of his life before he moved to Indiana.
