Can my 19 oz Sailor cue be cut to 16.5 oz?

I want a 16.5 oz cue... that's the weight I like. I have several Sailor cues that, like the one in the link, have a few inlays in the butt sleeve but none in the forearm and no points.

Would it be possible to have the weight in a cue like this one reduced from 19 oz to 16.5 oz ... or 17.0 max? Not this cue but another that is of similar construction?

Jim if it has a weight bolt that can be removed...and then maybe remove the shaft insert and swap the pin to aluminum or G10. That would do it. More serious surgery is possible too....replacing the handle and using aluminum in the A joint. Just my thoughts. Hate to hack up such a rare cue though...but as high as you'll stack the coins, you'll get it done right.:wink:
 
Approximately how expensive is it to drop an ounce from a cue that has no weight bolt? I just bought a pair of cues (made by Kevin .. uh.. something, I forget the last name;)), and I will likely want to do this.

Depends on the cues. Hate to quote sight unseen. Shoot me some pics and I'll get you a price. Hopefully its as quick & easy as a pin swap.:wink:

I'll be in touch if I decide I want the change. It may turn out that the cue will work for me as is. For now I am waiting for the cues to arrive; they were just shipped today and it will take awhile for them to get here:
Big ocean.
Slow boat.
Pirates.
Arrrgh.

I have read on this forum all kinds of reasons why someones cue/cues have been delayed but if the seller is telling you pirates might impact your delivery time - I hate to say it but he might be setting you up.
 
If someone believed pirates as a reason for delay, he is probably too stupid to be allowed to have big sticks anyway.

BTW: "Big ocean" + "Slow boat" + "Pirates" + "Arrrgh" = :rotflmao1:
 
Well, the boat arrived safely about an hour ago.

Ran two quick racks with the player and I doubt if I'll change it. It has a forward bias on the balance, and feels lighter than the 19.1 oz. my scale shows.

Jim, I would contact the cue maker himself, he built the cue and he can given you an accurate assessment of how much weight can be reduced. Plus is he agrees to do the work, the cue will loose no value, and still be original.

Thanks Craig. Sailor isn't doing much, if any, cue work these days. I'll consider options. Thanks, Jim

Even if he isn't doing any work at all, he knows how that cue was assembled. Doing repair work you would be surprised at the different techniques I have come across. It is best to find out if he used any unique methods of assemble, or trying to reduce the weight could open up a can of worms that you may not want let loose.

Thanks again Craig. I don't know the first thing about cue construction but I had gathered from my years on az that each artisan had his/her own methods so I had already decided, when you first posted your help to me, that I would just drop this idea entirely and probably just stick with the 17.8 oz Sailor w/Burton Spain blank that I"m using or else just have a new cue constructed for me at a point somewhere down the road when I know EXACTLY what I want... pretty close to knowing now.

The wheels are turning every day as I sort of unconsciously go back to mentally designing my cue, involuntarily... finding myself... of a moment.. seeing it and feeling it. It always has that Sailor flare on the butt (extra weight though). Purpleheart... llike that Matt Crisp cue that Fast-n-loose has been hawking... or all quilted or eyed maple like one that Jack Madden showed a year or two back... http://www.johnmaddencues.com/pop_gallery_detail.php?id=27. 16.5 to 17 oz, balances at 18.7 to 19, thin butt.. 1.2" to 1.25", .840 at the joint, Z2 shaft at 11.5mm, Super Pro tip. Still developing in my mind. It's FUN!
