Can you play good pool with any Cue?

There is a noticeable difference when I am playing with a cue that is not mine. Off the wall or someone elses $1000 custom, doesn't matter. If I don't know the particular playing characteristics of the cue in my hand, I will not be able to play as well as with my own cue.

Definitely. Athough, once in a while I find a cue that plays better than mine and I still play bad.

Best,
Mike

is there a broom handy?

Can you play good with any cue? Sure several post already qualified providing it has a good tip. Ok. I have my own cue worked into prime condition. No nicks or deformities, the butt is in optimal condition no imperfections in the linen wrap, the shaft is clean and sooth as silk. None of that has any bearing on the cue's ability to perform the task at hand. What it does do is prevent said imperfections from becoming the object of my attention. A distraction. Therefore raising my confidence level and my concentration on the task before me. Having said all that can I perform the same task with a different cue? Most certainly. After running a few balls with a different cue you should be able to acclimate yourself to the differences, most of which are usually minor & adjust accordingly. Simplifying your game & staying more to center english is helpful until you become acclimated to the new cue. As you become more comfortable with it you can let your stroke & your game out accordingly. I have played with numerous cues, my own, other players cues, bar rags off the wall with every sort of imperfection you can imagine from nicks, dings, bowed & even splinters. Still you can play with an unbelievable array of equipment. An extreme example of this is when I witnessed more than one player over the years play with the prevebial "Broomstick"!!! I kid you not. It peaked my interest to the point where yes... I tried it to. And while not the most optimal piece of equipment to use & I would imagine it was quite a spectacle to witness I was indeed able to play with a broomstick to some minor degree of proficiency. Ergo if I can, & I most certainly did do that, then I can play with any cue. Well that's my 2 cents folks & now I'm broke  Good luck & good pool. Billy Bones

You leave home and forget your cue, can you play good with any cue? Some people claim they cannot shoot good without their personal cue! Thanks for your input.

Within certain parameters yes. "Any" cue covers a broad range of equipment that qualifies under the rules to be called a pool cue. However some of those implements are better suited to being tomato stakes rather than being relied on to use to draw your rock three rails.

Let's just say that if you are up against the barroom barneys then you should be better than them with any cue off the wall. But if you are up against someone who is your speed or better then you definitely want something a bit better than the WalMart Sponge Bob cue with the BarelyLeather tip on it.

Where I live the HOUSE cues are the same two piece cues that are sold in teh USA for $80-$150. So it's always possible to find a decent cue on the wall to play with. And all the cues are properly maintained with perfectly shaped tips.

Thanks for the heads up, Sean.

LnL:

pt109 was nice; you just misread his post. The "Be nice if ..." is the Canuckian "short-hand" way of saying "It would be nice if ..." He was merely stating a "hinting" type of question to bring out Jim Buss, who you probably (or should!) know is an exceptional cue maker, that worked for NASA at one time.

Insert the two words "It would ..." in front of pt109's first sentence, and it will all make sense after that.

-Sean

I was not pointing the finger at PT109. He is my friend. He never comes down on me at any time. He is a great guy in my book, and so are you! Thanks for your input.

JB,
You said a lot with your post. I appreciate good info. Thanks again.

Allison and Efren were very familiar with their cues. When it comes to loading up a shot with english, you better be familiar with your cue, or more importantly these days, your shaft. There's no way you can be shooting with your usual level of confidence when spinning balls with an unfamiliar cue/shaft. Of course if you're playing inferior opponents, you'll get another turn at the table. That's not the point.

Most players of their caliber, play such good position, they are striking the OB with a center hit on the cue ball. Not loading it up with english.

Personally, I can play almost as good with any stick. My biggest problem is finessing the cue ball.

You could also do what Jim Buss has done with cue sticks. He takes a Budweiser cue and reworks the shaft. Then you can take a cue like this into a bar or pool room and when you take it out, everyone thinks you can't shoot.

Also, to top it off. take a pool glove, but put it on your grip hand...instead of the bridge hand. Works every time. ;)

I am proud of you, Fatboy2.

Try working a few games with a good house cue, tell yourself you can do this with no problem! At first just hit balls by yourself. Do this about an hour a day for a week and then tell me how you feel! Thanks for your input.

I am glad you tried the house cue out. Now you see first hand how it works... Thanks very much for your input!

I play with a house cue sometimes when I'm too lazy to go home and get my cue. I just make sure it has a good tip and once I find the cue's pivot point, I can play pretty good with it if I don't stray too far from center ball.
However to play my best game, I definitely need my own cue because the its weight, balance, pivot point, and deflection are all ingrained into my game and I can forget about the cue and fall into stroke, which I can't do with a house cue.

I can play well with any cue, as long as the shaft is straight and very smooth, the weight is anywhere between 20oz to 18oz, and the tip is in decent shape.

I shoot at the bars with either my Viking or my Meucci, and at the pool hall I'll use my Tucker cue, or alternatively, my Sherm Adams cue.

You have a lot of cues to play with. I like that, and your input. Thanks.

I have way more cues than I need. Some fairly expensive. But it always feels better spanking Mr. (insert pretentious name here) Custom User with a Cuetec or a Valley off the wall.

To me it's like switching golf clubs. I could play decent, but not as good with my ownsticks. I develop a feel, the weight, taper, and tip all adds up. Like putting on your favorite shoes for long walk. :o
