Thank you for your reply. The shaft that came with the longer pin is a really tight fit, but it fits the other pin perfectly.
I'm thinking maybe they didn't match the shaft to the butt. I'm only now expanding my knowledge on pool cues.

The ring on the top cue is really crooked. That does not scream "quality installation"

The rings aren't crooked but I will give you something to ponder.
If those two cues were built in the same shop, don't you think the thickness of the rings would be the same ?
That would also explain the different pin depth. It would also explain the different jnt tenon diameters.
All the clues are there.

The blk ring beneath the dash ring is of different thickness on each cue. The top rings are also of different thickness.
The only ring(s) of equal thickness are the dash rings.
Look close at the end-grain of the blk pheno top-ring/collar. Notice any difference ?
How could these differences exist if these cues were built in the same shop ?

I make all my cues in one shop, I don't have a standard depth that I set pins. I also don't have a standard ring size, looks to me the rings are just different sizes, that doesn't indicate poor craftsmanship. Can't tell if the rings a crooked, picture kind of distorts it in my opinion.
On the top cue, the silver slotted trim ring is definitely crooked. Like the ring billet was set in the black phenolic and then faced off wildly before gluing onto the butt.
Also, in the bottom photo, the bottom couple of threads are taking the light differently. Perhaps the pin was unscrewed from the butt some?
Can the pin in that cue be adjusted by hand with a piece of rubber to help grip it?

It looks that way to me also. The problem is cameras can do funny things. We have all seen pics of a cue where the cue looked ridiculously warped...banana level. That very well could have happened here creating the faulty look with the dashes.
Ehhhh, the black phenolic is a pretty good reference to show that it is actually helical. The facing/tolerances look way tighter on the bottom cue, too.

Probably not, and if you can, it means the pin is loose. It should be glued in solidly.
