Canadian border battle picks?

The current Canadian 9-ball champ Edwin Montal asked me to post this. Why is it that the current 9-ball champ of the country not a member of the Canadian team for the border battle?

Is the tournament the USA vs Eastern Canada and does not include players from Western Canada?

Who's on the team this year?

Without knowing the answer, my guess would be that the team was picked on each players accomplishments during the entire year, rather than during only the Canadian Championships. Another factor may be experience, or team leadership skills.

Ok, i will mention who I would like...

Edwin Montal - John Morra - Eric H - Tyler Eddy - Jason Klatt - Alex of course and possibly Alberta favorite Rob Phillips

It's teams of 4, right?

I think I'd go with a young-gun approach. Jason Klatt, John Morra, Erik Hjorleifson, and Martin Lalonde. Maybe throw in Martin Daigle as a backup.

PS. Tyler Eddy doesn't play anymore.

Your exactly right Jer and you know your right because you would have been one of the first calls i would have made to secure your services for commentary again. There is no Border Battle this year scheduled. The last one aired by TSN was from Trenton Airforce Base and was basically intended as a big "thank you" to our Canadian troops and their efforts on our behalf abroad. Pretty hard to argue that reasoning. Don't be confused when you see the Border Battle being aired now. TSN own the property and as such air it as filler when they are in need of programming (usually up against an NHL hockey game or an NFL football game). Sadly :-(

I encourage all pool fans in Canada to email TSN and request to see more pool on TV. That helps the sport because TSN have always been behind the game and just need a push every now and then. I bet our US friends wish they could say the same about ESPN.

The picks you see on TV now were made based on the Canadian Championships two years ago because those were the most recently played national cue sport title events played prior to the picks being made. The fact that there were no western players just illustrates the fact that the western Canadian players didn't fare too well a couple years ago, in any of the pool disciplines. Being a western guy myself I hope you can believe me when i tell you these picks were made solely based on performance that year alone. Edwin is a good friend of mine and I have always rated him as one of our country's best. Trust me if I would have the opportunity to pick Edwin based on his performance that year i would have. Truth of the matter is the best players on current form were selected. hope this clears up any confusion.

Pool politics, ruins the game and the people who play it.Thank God there not having it anyways. For some reason every Border battle I've seen doesn't have that ''wow'' factor, just kind of lame and boring JMHO

Last years production was probably what put the last nail in the coffin. Given that the format is similar to the Mosconi Cup, you'd think they'd steal a few successful ideas from there and make the Border Battle more interesting. Yet instead they held it on an airforce base in the middle of nowhere, with 2 spectators and no atmosphere. Damn you TSN! :(

I hope someone revives it and makes the necessary changes.

EDIT. Jim, was it TSN that held back the production, or lack of funding? I'm probably overstepping myself by asking that, but the concept of the Border Battle had so much promise. Seems a shame for it to die off when all it needed was a little makeover.

Meh, thanks for the response Jim, too bad the event is not a regular thing, although it was a little of a mismatch...

Is there anything at all on the go for pool in Canada in the distant future? The scene is freaking dismal, I just came back from the Medicince Hat tournament and the players are certainly looking to play, 116 players and a $12,000 calcutta...

Speaking of necessary changes, how did everyone feel about the timed sets? Each set was what, 20 minutes total, with a 30 second shot clock to prevent the leading team from stalling? It was an interesting idea.

I agree, The settings for the boarder battle were brutal! Theres no way that you couldn't sell it like the mosconi cup. How do you expect it to be a success when you have no door money coming in. I think the format for the event was cool. I really like the shot clock because some of the players that were in the event play very slowly at times and it makes the game boring for everyone to watch. If the boarder battle does come back in the near future I hope to see Edwin in there. 2 canadian 9 ball championships in 4 years is some good shooting! Of course not as good as back to back but still very good considering the young talent
