Happy New Year Guys!!!

This is a Standard Nickel/Silver Ring Cap that I make. It has an Ebony Body, 1/32" Nickel/Silver Ring with Black Linen Fiber Collars on each side of the N/S Ring. Threaded Brass Insert and sprayed with a Polyurethane Clear Coat Finish. The Ebony Body is machined with a tendon that the Collars and Ring slide over.
I know it's an overkill, but, that's the way cues are made(though, some cues have the collars threaded on).I sell this cap for $35.00
What's you're thoughts on the pricing? What would you charge?
Do the pool players realize that's a lot of work, or, is it just a Joint Protector and don't give it much thought execpt that it cost so much???

You can see by so many postings about "Who makes the best pool cue for under $100", that the vast amount of players, don't have any idea about workmanship, quality & me as a craftsman, to pay for good products. Add to that the huge numbers of players that buy junk cues from overseas. Now you can take from that, the feelings players have about joint protectors. When I sell any low end cue, whether it be mine or another cuemakers, I offer a set of cheap joint protectors for $15. 90% say no. I appreciate your work, but find it very hard to think that many will pay your prices, if they won't spend a mere $15. GOOD LUCK, but I think you have to be realistic...JER

A customer that orders a cue from me that is $1000 and up, is going to have a set of custom JP made typically. I would also say they typically want the to match the cue, and that means the JP you have listed will not work. I have charged up to $200 for a set of JP, but you are correct they are a lot of work. My customers that own production cues, which the JP you have pictured would work on, will pay $35 for them sometimes. The problem is I cannot buy them for $35 from you and sell them for $35. So I would build them myself. I hope this helps you with your answer. I would say you need to target Players, not cuemakers IMO. I would not build this set of JP for $35 though, only if the customer is buying a cue at the same time. Pricing is probably right on target for the player though, if he wants to protect is investment with some beauty. Happy New Year, and I do love your work, I am just trying to anwer your question the best I can.

I don't like making custom joint protectors. I'm not set up for it so I can make a complete shaft in not much more time and with a cost of only about 6 or 8.00 more and that's for each protector. I'd rather leave the protector making to the people who specialise in them.
I buy cheap plastic protectors, engrave my initials/logo on their tops and give them with each cue I sell.
I did have a person come in a few days ago to have a Predator shaft fitted to his Southwest and wanted matching joint protectors. I told him I don't like making them but I went ahead and made a set for 120.00 which he thought was very reasonable.

It may help that when you quote a potential customer a price on your product, and when he asks how to contact you to pay - that you do not tell him a week later that you don't want to make the caps "because of the work it would take".

When I compare the work and materials involved in making one joint protector to the replacement of one ferrule I do not want to make one joint protector for $35.00. The joint protector is a lot more work and more investment in materials. I do not think your joint protectors' prices are out of line but you need to find a market and I think that will be pretty hard to do.

Joint protectors are a lot of hard work with very little reward. They just are not apprecitated.

Good Cuemaking,
