Carom Table Movers/Mechanics Experience

As many of you already know, it can be difficult in the extreame to get your newly purchased carom table to your location and set up. There is no central dispatch, or any other method, other than word of mouth, to find a qualified person for the job. Nor is there any kind of review site, or ratings system where customers can comment on their chosen installer and vice versa. I wish I had the time to make a site where installers could bid on your job. Where and you and they, could provide feedback for the future customers. I feel that this would encourage better customer relations and perhaps foster a more professional attitude among the members of this elite industry. If YOU are someone that has the talent to build such a site, please help us a out!

In the meantime, I would encourage everyone to post their dealings with the various movers and installers of carom tables, both good and bad. I've run the full spectrum from the worst to the best, I think. I've learned a lot, and sprouted a few more gray hairs in the process.

For the first review, I'll list a very positive sentiment.

Mr. Jay Spielberg, based in New Hampshire, 603.765.6160 - This gentleman, could be the most knowledgable table mechanic around. Very professional, and a high level of communication. Cost was reasonable. The move and setup were executed in a timely manner. Jay moved two Soren Sogard carom tables for me from the Northeast region of the United States to Savannah, GA. He spent all the time that was required to make sure the job was done correctly.

A somewhat negative review.

Yura (sp?) based in NJ 908.216.2034 - By all accounts this mover/installer was touted to be a very honest, professional and reliable person. While he does to seem to be very honest, he proved to be very unreliable. I cannot comment on his skills, as the move didn't happen. I initially hired him to move one table from NY to Savannah. This was to be coupled with another job, and thus the price was fairly quoted accordingly. After a few days, I asked for him to bring a second table which lay along the southward route. He agreed and we negociated a new price. The day before he was due to set off on the road he demanded a 50% deposit. This was never part of our agreement (in fact, he told me that he didn't need one). I didn't feel comfortable sending the money at such late notice (after being burned once already). He immedietly decided to cancel our agreement.

Dean Choe 201.966.5335 based in Ridefield, NJ - This table mover should not be trusted under any circumstance. He agreed to move one carom table from NY to Savannah. The price was set, no deposit was asked for. Two days before intended delivery, he demanded a 50% deposit. I complied and sent the money. It was nothing but lies and deciet from this fellow. He apparently had never intended to deliver the table. Eventually, he revealed that he lied and could not send me the deposit money back. After several threats from other interested parties, and civil court action, over the last few weeks. He has finally started paying the deposit back in small payments.

I feel I cannot let your comments about Jay be all sunshine...as I have had a few dealings with him over the years. I gotta complain:

he drove right by my house...TWICE...and he never stopped by to have a beer or let me buy him dinner!

Jay is a table expert of extra-ordinary magnitude. Pro-level players contact him to do the tables in their rooms because he knows tables, and is reliable.

Glad to hear the 2 of you got together, Jamie.

Thanks Jamie for the kind words. With customers like you and Joe at the Billiards club it's a pleasure to do my job. Thanks again for all the help unloading and the hospitality. I was disturbed to her about your experiences with the other two mechanics, I know Yura, and he is a very qualified mechanic with years of experience working on billiard tables. The other fellow you mentioned is unknown to me but I'm glad you posted your negative experience with him so others won't have to go through what you did.

Black Balled, I would have contacted you earlier for a get together and a beer
but this was a late fill in for another mechanic and I was trying to make it back home for Thanksgiving. My next planned trip I'll set up a time for us to have dinner and drinks on me.

Jay

great

Jay S. recently recovered the 3 soren tables where I play at World Class Billiards, he does great, fast work. Anyways not even 1 HOUR after he left somebody tries a masse shot and puts a nice 2 inch rip in the cloth ! I swear I couldnt even make that up, anyways Jay came right back, offered to recover the table for free, but there was a USBA tourney the next few days and no time to get cloth, so Jay fixes the rip as so you cant even feel it anymore, and does it for free! When I get my 3C table I hope Jay will install it.

It was very sad to see the table damaged right after we installed the new cloth for the USBA tournament. The owners at World Class work very hard to promote billiards in the New England area and have always treated me and my crew great. I thought it was the least I could do to help them out two days before a major tournament.

table mechanics

I have used Gray Blocker of Atlas Billiards in Jacksonville,904-997-9018. He set up and covered my Olhausen billiard table. I have not needed to use him on a move yet but I know he has experience in this area. He is honest and a hard worker, workmanship is top notch.
