As others have mentioned, getting a scratching post that the cat actually likes will most likely keep it from scratching on your table.
To just keep the cat away from the table period, there is a product called Boundary, which you can get in pet stores or online. You can test it to make sure your cat doesn't like it (there is one for cats and one for dogs). Then spray around the table once in a while to keep the kitty away.
You can also try an orange citrus cleaner spray, depending on your cat. Maybe a wood cleaner or general purpose spray. Most cats hate orange citrus scent.

The cat with front claws who puts my cloth most at risk does so when she stretches and fans out her claws to knead. She has snagged the cloth once but I managed to prevent any real damage.
There is furniture polish with citrus scents. Get sticker paper from a office max or staples and lay this on the edges of the pool table.

I would have thought pool players were mostly dog people. It's gratifying to see that so many are also cat lovers, or at least tolerate their GF's cat. My own is asleep next to me. Cat,that is.

I'm a dog person who's gf (now wife), had a cat. When she moved in she brought her cat which was tough because I was highly allergic. I got over my allergies thankfully. I had two dogs at the time as well. We volunteered at humane societies and fostered litters and single cats. We've adopted many more and we now have a zoo at home!

Back when I had cats and a pool table, our pool room was closed off, but if I had seen this, I would have opened it up and laid out the foil, all over the place.
My cats were named Miscue and Squirt, and I'm sure anything like the action in that video would have confirmed their names. I'm pretty sure that cat miscued AND squirted.
