Ceramithane

I understand on using the fingernail test. I personally would not be bothered with 2 weeks for it to cure. My question is, once cured, do you really feel it is significantly harder based on your tests than the General Finishes?

Thanks.

Kelly

I am retired so what the hell do I care how long it takes to cure. LOL

Sometimes I just get a glass of wine and watch the finish cure on a cue. It's all the excitement I need.

Yes... I do feel that is is harder than the general finishes material. i do know it buffs better.

I'll epoxy coat a maple dowel and send them to you for comparison Kim.

If it's harder than my epoxy coat, I'll give Ceramithane a try.
Oddly enough, the best car finish there is ( supposedly ) is Ceramiclear .
I'm not touching car finish though.

I'll tell you what...... I will make up a maple dowel with the Ceramithane and you make one with the epoxy and we'll exchange them..... what do you think???

Mine will take about about 2 weeks ....

Let me know

That's good.
I'll make one now.

Kim, I can not get that product here.
Is it at all flammable?
Is there any where on the west coast that I can buy it from that will post overseas?
Thanks Neil

It is not flammable and I don't think is restricted for Air shipping.

I sent you a PM with some info.... I hope it helps

Kim,

I recently got some Target EM9300 and I think it is better than the GF Pre-Cat or Enduro-Var (clearer and harder) it just takes a little longer to dry and cure out.

You mentioned that you had also used the EM9300 and have changed over to the Ceramithane. You also mentioned why you liked it better than the GF finishes and why. What qualities does it have over the EM9300?

Thanks, this has all been good information.

Kim,

Great looking finish.

I have a death wish and want to kill myself slowly over time with Auto Poly.:thud: Just kidding, I wear a mask. Does this stuff need ventilation?

Do the bump test with a scrap piece of purpleheart that will tell the tale of the fingernail trail.

Thanks for sharing.

I wonder how it sticks to metalic rings or any other non porus type of material as compared to auto clear?

The main thing that I noticed right away is that the ceramithane flows out flat and smooth and requires less sanding. It does take longer to dry and 2 coats max per day.

The 9300 might be a bit harder but the ceramithane polishes brighter.... just my perception.

I have a habit of putting on my respirator before I do anything. I got this idea after cutting purple heart on the band saw with out a respirator when I first started. It made me sick to my stomach for 4 hours. I am not too smart because I did it again 2 days later. Of course you want to wear breathing protection when cutting or turning most any wood especially the toxic ones.

I don't have any outside ventilation. It does have a different odor from other water clear finishes but not strong or offensive. If you read the MSDS it doesn't show much of anything that gasses off that is dangerous. I wouldn't snort it though. lol It warns you of not breathing the sanding dust but I think that goes for all sanding any way.

I use a base coat of epoxy over everything so I can't tell you. You might search the internet for info by people that use it for other things.

If I were to switch to waterborn I would have to change my methods. I like to seal the cue with epoxy after final turn then sand it down until all that is left is in the pores of the wood. This also shines up any metalic rings and the epoxy keeps the sanding dust from leaching into any of the other materials. I then put my clear on and all my ring work shines nice. I am worried that epoxy or ca over the rings would dull them out. I do like the idea of using a water based clear though although it seams there is always a compromise.

Ask other forum members but I am sure that many put epoxy over metal rings with no dulling of the metal shine.

I'm curious- what was the result of the Joey/Kim exchange?

I received Kim's sample.
Thanks Kim.
It was nicely done by Kim.
I really don't like spraying anymore so I am sticking to hand applied epoxy.

Does that mean that since we agreed to swap .... you have changed your finish method?

Just send me a sample of what you do now.
