Chalk etiquette?

Blue cloth Valleys where I play during the week. Blue masters chalk provided. Tables get allot of league and general play and owner changes out cloth regularly and we keep them up best we regulars can.

There is a guy that comes in from time to time with 'his' black Silver Cup and leaves his black crap all over cue ball and table. I can tell what table he has been playing from the night before by all the black leftovers and I clean it up.

All of us who play loathe the black dots all over the cue ball and black dust, debris on our blue cloth. It gets smeared into and stains cloth. One night he comes over and drops his quarters on the 8' table we play allot on ( there are three 7 sevens and one 8' footer) I tell him he is not welcome to play if he insists on using his 'special' black chalk it leaves black all over the cue ball and table. He thinks I am joking. I am not.

His turn to rack later on and out comes the black chalk. As soon as he leaves it on the rail after his dry break I snatch it and put it in my pocket. Once he notices it's gone he throws a fit 'wheres my chalk' I told him in the garbage but welcome to play with any of the 2-3 cubes of blue masters on the rail but opts to put his cue away and storms off like a little girl. He almost cried. Haven't seen him for sometime.

I am a very reasonable and respectful sportsmen. HOwever, I think it's rude and inconsiderate to deface balls and tables with dark colored ( Black, Red, Dk Brown) non-matching chalk on any table.

Have a good week,

-Kat,
Great move!! He deserved it.

At the room i usually play at it takes less than an hour to have the palm of my bridge hand turn completely black, I don't think they clean the tables more than twice a year, so i play with whatever color chalk i feel like.

Same story Sir!

How about if they want you to use red chalk?

Sure no prob if you can find a table with that nice red cloth to use your red chalk on.

This should make it simple:

Blue cloth = Blue chalk
Green cloth = Green chalk
Tan cloth= Tan chalk
Gray cloth = Gray chalk
Black cloth = Black chalk
Red cloth = Red chalk

-Kat,

Bigger problem... Baby powder usage for those with naturally sweaty hands. I've seen tables that look like a war zone after one of those players is done with a long match.

-Kat,

im sure tho everyone will agree..that blue or green chalk on the opposite color blue or green cloth isn't nearly as bad as say a black on tan or red on tan lol....i'd be pissed lmfao....or red on green....omg...i'm already getting upset lol

Roger that GG. And I am not always serious for instance > 'nice red cloth'. Why ? That red cloth throws my whole game and mojo off and I don't have much to begin with. HaHa.

I have played them all... I like blue/green. Well like everything here, it's personal preference and to each their own. I do think black looks sexy but is odd to play with unless it's on your lady.

I need an aspirin. My blood pressure is skyrocketing!

While I'm usually anal about appearances, pool is where I care zero about appearance and everything about performance. If anything, I'd rather people use a different color chalk so we know when the table is gunked up and needs to be cleaned.

Also I use Kamui chalk. I'm not buying one of every color for every table I might play on, that stuff's expensive. Use good chalk and polished balls and the amount of chalk that ends up on the cloths is negligible anyway.

I have a friend who insists on using gray chalk on my tourn blue. Drives me nucking futs. He likes to use the gray to keep his shaft cleaner. In other words, he cares about his shaft, but not my table. I say conform to house owner's wishes or find a table with cloth of your chalk color. Be respectful.

I had a orange cloth so I have orange chalk. Recovered the table with Samonis Blue and still use the orange chalk because I have a lot of it but actually found helps me see the chalk easier and remove it.

Those that say the different color chalk makes the table dirty is the same as saying don't get white seats in a car becasue they get dirtier faster. The dirt is still there so remove it.

Ha sorry about getting you worked up with my topic. :D.

I went to shoot today at a near by hall (and get a free polishing for my home balls) and the chalks that came with the green table I was on we're green and blue. I guess it doesn't matter there. I also won't leave a cube upside down on the rail and I'll tap excess chalk off my cue before I shoot.

Generally it's the people that can't play a lick bring that crap to the table.

I think that it's up to the table owner's discretion and you should ask before using a different color chalk. I think it's called respect for the property of others.

The reality is that whether it's the chalk you see or the matching chalk you don't, there will still be chalk on the table.

Only thing I don't like when it comes to chalk is when people leave chalk on the table, period!!!
I hate that....lol

Besides I've also seen it when people leave their chalk cube in "inconspicuous places" but are actually marking their bank shots.

I wish APA and BCA and EVERY other organization that hosts pool games
would adopt a rule that says no chalk on the table at any time, not even while you're shooting.

Look at snooker players. Most of them put the chalk in their pocket when they're done using it.
I usually have a chalk holder in my pocket. I like it more anyway than dancing all over the table looking for a cube.

Couldn't have said it better and I 100% agree.

The tavern that I shoot out of recently bought another table from a local bar that shut down. When the pool techs came out to resurface and maintain it, they found two handfuls of chalk inside the table. Ugh! I figure if you can't afford under $10 for a chalk holder then you should rethink whether you should be playing pool at all.

He's not your friend!

If you at your home, or a pool room owner insists that their house chalk be used because of the color, then they have an obligation to make sure the chalk is of a good quality and DRY. When chalk is not properly stored it can get damp and cause miscues. So if a pool room or friend wants me to use their chalk, they'd better make sure it's in good condition, or I'll take my own chalk out of my case and use it, regardless of the color.

Also, I have no problem with people leaving chalk on the rails, but not face-down. If someone does that I will wipe every rail on the table when it's my turn to shoot. They eventually get sick of my constant wiping and will pay attention to what they're doing and put the chalk down face-up.

Right

My table has tan cloth so I use tan chalk. When I step out to a hall with different color cloth I usually use their chalk. I assume pool halls wouldn't like tan chalk on their blue, green or whatever color tables. Am I right about that or doesn't it really matter?

You are right about that. I helped out at the local Poolroom and the kids were bringing in red chalk, we had green Simonis. It was a lot of extra work trying to clean those tables.
The owners stopped it as there was no reason for them to use it.
I have green Simonis on my table and sometimes use Tan chalk on shafts that I am test hitting , the tan on green cloth is no big deal to clean.

One of my bigger pet peeves in pool. Chalk should always face up... .and please, stop "dumping" the balls out of the tray on to the table like a 5 year old.... just remove them quietly, it takes all of 3 seconds. yikes !!!
