I just got some new masters chalk and it seems moist, almost like it wipes on the tip. Do you think this make a difference in how it does its job? Someone said i should dry it out. Does this really increase chalks performance? I heard that Johnny Archer Likes to use old pre-flag chalk. Chalk that old must be really dry by now, so i guess thats one vote for dryed out chalk. Opinions or science welcome. Thanks
 
NIR VS Master chalk

Recently purchased NIR Chalk and found noticeable difference in texture.
Drier and stays on tip longer.
I think that the tip is the most important thing. I use sniper tips for the last 3 years and probably would not go back to Mori.
Master chalk has really gone down hill the last few years. It seems to get damp very quickly no matter what the playing conditions and the need to rough up the tip more often.

The closest I have found to the old Masters is Silver Cup. I would still like to try some Blue Diamond but just havent had the drive to pony up $1 a cube.

Erm, it is usually more like $3.50+ a cube. At $1 a cube I would jump at it. I just bought a case of it for over $150.
 
Blue Diamond Chalk and Russian Magic Chalk both work great, but they are about the same price. If you don't lose chalk then I'd recommend it. But to be honest, I can't tell a huge difference between them and Master's Chalk.

I heard people also had success with soaking their chalk in milk then microwaving it. Might try that too ;)
 
I just recently switched over to Blue Diamond chalk and I can say that there's a slight difference between the two. In my case, it seems like the Blue Diamond might be a little bit more moist than the Masters that I have, and doesn't go on as evenly, but the Blue Diamond definitely hangs on a lot longer.
 
Dry them out ???

If humidity is a problem, why not dry the chalk cubes out before taking them to the pool hall .... or, the pool room.

I keep my cigars in a humidor to keep them at the proper humidity.

I'm not all fancy so I don't have a humidor. What I do have is a Shamwow, leave that baby on your chalk and you'll be saying "SHAMWOW"!

Then again, you are probably better off using Blue Diamond. :)
 
Is more moist better in chalk? I have Master and Silver Cup chalk, and the Master seems a lot more moist, but does that mean more grab? I wish I had a perfectly consistent stroke so I could draw the cue ball and see which grabs more... but I don't.
 
I keep my chalk in a bag of rice. Works great at keeping it nice and dry, but every once in a while we have blue rice for dinner.
 
I find it works good to rub the chalk face down on the floor really fast to build up static electricity in the cube. Its amazing how well it sicks to the cue tip after that! :wink: Thanks for the comments. One thing i do know, i have come across chalk that doesn't work very well, i just dont understand why.
 
Pop a piece of chalk in the microwave and hit the "1 minute" button (high power). This will cook the moisture out of the chalk. Let it sit in the microwave for at least 15 minutres to avoid burning your hand (or at least be very careful with it for the first 15 minutes as it cools down).

Alternately, place a dozen chalk cubes on a cookie sheet and cook in a preheated oven at 250 for 30 minutes, and allow to cool.
 
I never really thought about chalk quality until I started reading these boards. Was going to try the Diamond chalk and then I read a thread about pre-flag master chalk. It made me remember that I had an old Walmart purchased Dufferin 2 piece in a case in my mother's attic (we're talking almost 20 years ago) and I remembered I had a box of chalk stuffed in one of the pockets of the case. Sure enough, 11 pieces of pre-flag Master chalk! I can tell a difference when applying the chalk, it just feels finer and coats the tip better. I put it aside for now, but it's nice to know I don't have to pony up for the BD chalk. :)
 
Hey, Old Timer! Only the old school farts (like me) know this trick.

I frequently mention "baking my chalk" and people think I'm kidding.

BTW peeps, you DON'T soak you chalk in milk - only your tips.

Keep your tips away from the oven and your chalk away from the milk, ok?

Is that a greased or ungreased cookie sheet?
 
Haha Poolhustler! Think that will last you for a while?

My measly 11 pieces will probably last me 2 years!
