Champion Tips?

Those were sold as Chandevert Champion tips and I haven't seen any in years. The Triumph tips also have the red fiber backing an play fairly well.they are still readily available.
I have only one Chandevert left but it's a "Rocky" hard tip.

I have a "stash" of them, but I feel they've "rotted".

I'm responding partly because of your avatar.My main player is a
'68 Joss.
Champion tips are made in Paris,France.For most of the last century
french tips were the state of the art.The best of them were pre -WW2.
The family that made them were wiped out from a bomb (probably allied)
Players in the UK and North America know how heavy their cue is in
ounces - how long it is by inches - but we know how wide it is by
millimeters because of the French influence.
Mingaud,a French carom player,first thought of a leather tip and chalk.
I think it's strange that for over a 100 years French tips were the best
for putting english on the cue ball..now it's Japanese...

They had character. They weren't just hard tips. I felt there was a crispness to their hit. It was a feel thing for me.
BTW, i was told there's two versions: the original champions and later, a champion redux that weren't as good. Is this true?
The quality went downhill as the man got older.He was in his 90's and
still working.You couldn't get any unless you could speak flawless
Parisian French.I had a friend who had a friend who lived 3 doors from
him.Every box of tips that i got felt like an international conspiracy.
At some point a company took over and quality suffered.
The pre-war tips came from leather buried for a year in a special solution.
...Some people surmised that it was urine....
...I don't want to know what their #2 tips were buried in...
