Changes to the US Open!!!!!

1. contingency of 8 or more from a froeign country get "placed" in the bracket so they don't face each other too soon (travel long way to face each other to soon) this effected Kuwait and the Philipino groups.
2. No I-Pods to listen to music (question of professionalism)
3. You can wear hats though (no question of professionalism I guess)
4. Four (4) yes I said four (4)hours to draw the brackets!!!!!
5. More discussion led to statement of NOTHING in your ears (plugs,etc)

Barry says he wants to fill the tournament by encouraging more foreign participation......I think he missed the point and on a personnal note.....? isn't this the US OPEN

You won't find any other country placing foreign players, but then again why should they and we shouldn't either.........top 32 players get seeded after that, take the draw and play!

I cannot tell you how many tournaments I have traveled to and the first round I have to play the guy I went there with! This change is total BS!

I believe the draw should be 100% random!

These countries are sending teams that work together in tournaments, so their "team" wins. If you seed them, it just makes it easier for them to control the field.

Real bad move. That's completely ridiculous. What's next tournament pairings deternmined by zip code. Oh, well you only drove five minutes so you have to play Joe and Jim from your local bar.

And the Earplug Rule? Come on. So people can't block out distractions but Shane Van Boeing who wears hearing aids can take them out so he gets the SAME EFFECT as a person who wants to wear them?

So are they going to make Shane wear his hearing aids and check to make sure that they are ON???? Stupid Rule.

I can understand the one banning the music players as it does look kind of silly to see players playing while wearing them. I don't understand banning ear plug.

Hats I can understand as some people can't take the glare from the lights. Plus if pool is a sport then allow people to wear sporting attire - to a degree as I don't really want to see Buddy Hall in spandex.

I think I will bet on the Filipino contingent this year to take home most of the money from the prize fund. Any takers???
 
I think I remember reading an article about somebody from the Philipines saying that last year all their players were matched up agianst each other and that they were getting bad racks. It ws a link to another website. Anybody remember that post?

Seems One Thing Was Forgotten . . .

Seems like one thing was forgotten with these changes, shouldn't the name be changed to the US Team Open? If this is an individual championship what difference does it make who you draw? Why would it be more fair for someone from the Philippines to play someone from Kuwait first than for two people from either of the two countries to play? Someone is still going to lose and the distance traveled hasn't been shortened one inch for either player.

Why only groups of eight or more so it only applies to two countries? Why is it fair for seven people from the same country to play each other early but not eight? Sounds like a rule carefully designed to cater to a few people.

I think the whole idea is horse hockey but if you are going to protect people from the same country from playing each other it should be done across the board. I suspect that isn't possible for the US players so there would be an exception for them. We can name this the Keep International Shooters Satisfied Although Sillily Structured drawing rule. That is a mouthful so someone can probably work out an acronym for it.

As for rule five, it is illegal. Force anyone to remove a hearing aid and they can file suit and win without breaking a sweat. No I-Pod or cell phone type devices might make sense but when you go throwing rules together at the last minute you get all of these ill thought out rules. A hat to protect your eyes but not ear plugs to protect your ears? What is the difference?

Kuwait sent 8 players to the Open? I didn't think that there were four pool players in Kuwait? :-)

Just kidding, the Middle East appears to be heating up, no pun intended, about pool.
 
That's true Hu. I didn't think about it but technically the players are "at work" and so forbidding them to wear earplugs, thus impinging their ability to work could be construed as discriminatory. Or something-a-tory..........

Pretty stupid changes as far as I can see it.

I hate bright light in the edge of my vision. It wasn't nearly the issue when I was younger so I suspect it has something to do with the structure of our eyes changing as we get older. However, there are people that have equal difficulties ignoring every little sound or people talking while they shoot. There isn't any basis for blocking one but not the other, both affect play.

The Middle East have produced a goodly number of players capable of competing at international level
Naif Aljaweni (Saudi Arabia)
Jaled Al Otela (Jordan)
Hani Al Howri (Abu Dhabi)
Samir Frange (Lebanon)
Khaled Al Mutri (Kuwait)
Mohammad Yousef (Kuwait)
Are all play to a high standard and many more are approaching this level.
 
I understand that Rule #1 is in consideration of the distance travelled by the participant but in all fairness slots should be drawn. Seeding is a norm but seeded players should also draw for the designated slots.

From the other end of the argument. The 14 hours Philippines to West Coast flight and its associated expense is really quite a burden specially since there's just 1 tournament worth participating in for this trip.

In consideration for the above, a World Professional Pool Org should exist to streamline the scheduling of tournaments so that everyone benefits. Maybe do tournaments in 4 season countries during the summer months and do winter tourneys in 2 season countries where the winter temps are milder. Ummm, do like the birds?

Can assure you bandido that if it weren't for the "birds" you have out there nobody I know would visit The Phillipines half as often as they currently do :p :)
 
Yes the placing of players is a poor decision and when it was questioned BARY was very defensive about it, I dont think we would get the same treatment in any of the overseas events, Infact we are not even aloud to play most events overseas. They seeded 32 players and thats how it should have stayed.

The other thing people were a littled peed off about, the draw was done behind closed doors for the first time, in the past they have done it right there in front of people.
