Changing buttband adding rings

How difficult is it to change out the butt in a cue. I was just sent oics of a cue i have on order. It looks good but i think ivory inlays an rings would look better.

Is it difficukt to do this?

Would i be better off sellin this cue and placing an order for a new cue an wait another 15 months?

I'm just guessing?? but have you asked the one making the cue, because he might be the only one who has the right answer to your question.

Let me just repeat what you said:

"I ordered a cue, I haven't received it yet, I don't like it already. I want to change it but I don't have it yet."

Play with a house cue. You can change it when ever you like...........

I think you are hyper-sensitive.

My guess, the first reply was sincere. I do not the other two posters or if they are cuemakers.

Good luck with a cuemaker sending all that you listed during a build...

Maybe you should take more time up front BEFORE you submit a design?

apologies

I am sorry for the snyde remarks but I am hypersensitive.

I am in a situation that I am not sure how to handle due to prior bad experiences. This is why I turn to cuemakers for advice.....not sarcasm.

I am selling the cue and starting over.

Thank you for your responses.

No its not hard, yes it can be done if one has the capability and equipment to do so. But it would be costly.

But I believe it turns to ethics I wouldn't just start working on another makers cue that was freshly finished unless he or she gave me permission and they didn't have the ability to do it themselves.

I'm not sure why you got a smartass response. It was uncalled for, and you are right to be upset by it. Mike Webb was not giving you a smartass answer, though. His response was spot on.

It depends on when you change the design. This is something you must ask the builder about. If it's before the butt sleeve has been installed, and granted that it's not a pointed or what not sleeve, then it's likely not going to be a problem to change the design. However, if the sleeve is installed & the cue has been final tapered, then it's a HUGE problem to change it. In fact, in my shop, it would be easier to begin an entirely new cue from scratch than it would be to disassemble one at size & try to change out parts. This would mean a longer build time, naturally, and a lot more out of pocket cost for the builder in terms of shop time and material costs. This is likely why the first experience went so sour, and the builder became frustrated. It is wise to nail down a design before the build begins. Unlike a car, parts cannot be swapped out at leisure. Once assembled, it's permanent. It's a major job to change things around after the fact.

Again, Mike was exactly correct when he said you should ask the builder because he'd be the only one who can answer. The other response(s) were out of line. You asked a legitimate question & should have been answered by legitimate cue makers with legitimate answers. And you were, by Mr. Webb. Not all cue makers are dicks, but we have our share & probably all of us can be at times. Don't stop buying custom cues simply because you had a misunderstanding with one builder and some rude comments from an online forum. Good custom cues by good custom cue makers are vastly superior to almost all production cues. The problem you ran into was simply not knowing how a cue is built, and things went sour before you were able to get a grip on understanding why. Nothing wrong with that. Misunderstandings make us human.

eric...you are the man

Thank you eric.

You response is always spot on and I have learned so much from your posts that I can not tell you how appreciative I am for you being on here.

I have another custom cue that I would like designed and like you said, I have learned my lesson.

After I have cliff manning make me a burton spain tribute cue (my next custom I hope), I would like to talk to you about having a cue made. I know you hear that all of the time but we were supposed to meet up two SBE's ago and I could not find you at any of the booths.

What sucks is that I go to SBE every year and most of the cue makers I speak with are incredibly humble and help me with my ignorance. I always feel bad about asking to hit their cues when I know I will not be buying them that day.

Last year, cory barnhart was kind enough to talk to me and let me hit his cues, I just could not afford his cues at the time. I hope that I can own one of his cues as well at some point.

I can tell you none of these comments were snide or smarta$$. I also qualified my post as me not being a CM.

I made an observation on your reactions to people from the Internet. Nothing more, nothing less.

Good luck to you...

I don't think your post was at all rude, and i'm sure he feels the same. It just sucks that a guy cannot ask a simple question around here without being harassed and/or belittled. The posts he took offense to (with the exception of Webb's) were the ones that were ridiculing him. I would have taken offense as well.
