Changing Diamond Pro pockets from black to brown

I am tired of cleaning black marks off the balls caused by the black dye from the pockets on my Diamond Pro. I have tried treating the pockets in several ways that have been discussed on the AZ forums - with very limited success. I am considering changing the pockets from black to brown when I have my table re-covered. Can someone give me a ballpark figure on the cost of buying new brown leather pockets for a 9' Diamond Pro w/pro cut pockets?

About $240, all the pockets are the same size.

Would there be a differance between brown or black spots? If you do swap out,you can send me the black ones,I`ll pay the shipping...:grin-square:

I have a friend that has a Diamond Pro with brown pockets -- they must have a better type of dye - they do not leave marks on the balls.

I agree. I have brown diamond pockets and they have put little to no marks on the balls.

New Black Pockets

Diamond has been continually working on trying to eliminate the black marks from the dye. They used their latest version at the last Mosconi cup and I also put a set of the pockets in the table at the TAR studio, here in Las Vegas. About 200 racks or more of ten ball and NO black marks, NOT ONE EVEN!!!

As it was explained to me, the black dye on a molecular level, the dye particles are bigger than the pores in the leather so some of the dye sits on top of the leather rather than penetrating into it. Thats where the black marks are coming from.

The new pockets are a solution that the pockets get dipped into and the chemical composition of the solution changes the brown to Black!!! No more dye therefor no more black marks.

If you cant wait I understand changing them from black to brown.

I think they have found the right answer, but it takes time to set up for a new manufacturing process and plus figure out all of the variations that have to be dealt with. For example, on certain pockets the leather had a different grain or slight color variation and the pockets turned GREEN when dipped.!!!

Anyway be assured that Diamond is always striving for better and better and continues to do that, but I have no idea how long or what cost is involved in producing these new pockets.

I already tried to prepay 50 sets to sell here in Vegas and they just laughed!!!!!

So, not to stop you from buying new pockets, that will stop the marks, but I just wanted to let everyone else who is discouraged know that it seems they found an answer and are currently working on getting all the kinks worked out .

AGAIN, THE NEW POCKETS ARE NOT AVAILABLE YET AND THE PRICE IS YET TO BE DETERMINED!!!MAYBE BY CHRISTMAS?NEXT DERBY? NEXT SUMMER?
might take a year for all I know for R&D

PLEASE REALIZE THAT GUYS CALLING DIAMOND AND ASKING ABOUT THE POCKETS JUST MAKES IT TAKE LONGER!!!

I have seen this problem reported several times in different threads. What is Diamond doing about it? It seems to me that they should be replacing the pockets for free on any table that has ball marking problems since it's related to the dye that's being used in the leather pocket. Am I being naive in believing that a manufacturer that has a problem with his product would find a fix for the problem and then make appropriate repairs in the field. I'm not knocking Diamond since they seem to have the best tables on the market today but just asking opinions.

The black marks are not exclusive to Diamond. It seems to be common with all black leather pockets, and to hear that Diamond is trying to find a solution is commendable and something the entire industry will benefit from.

I have a 30 year old Gandy. I recently had my leather pockets replaced. They are brown. I am also getting marks transferred onto the balls. The strange thing is, as I've looked at these in many different types of light, they are BLACK. Could the marks be coming from any other source than the dye?
