Changing shelf depth on a table.

I am taking in a table from a friend who recently purchased a Diamond. The table is a furniture style Dufferin. It plays way too difficult down the rails and spits balls out all the time.

I had been talking to a friend about shimming the pockets in an effort to reduce the ball rattling. He says I probably will have to get a stone cutter to alter the shelf depth in order to achieve what I want, which is playing close to Diamond pockets. Is this true?

I dont think Id do that. Id just play with it. Im not convinced its the table if there is a real problem. You might be playing shots center ball and are getting cue ball induced throw and hitting the pocket point going in. Any diamond new or not will spit balls out if you do that, or you might have a rubber issue.
 
Have a good mechanic take a look at why it's spitting back...is it you or the table needs to be worked on? Johnnyt
 
Usually, if pockets are throwing balls out, its because the pockets ( rubber or leather liners ) are installed wrong.
Look to see if the rubber is cut behind the rail or is sticking out into the pocket area.
A good table mech can easily fix it.

Check out the pocket angles before chewing away at the pocket shelf.
141 degrees is right. 143+ spits balls. Less than 139 will swallow balls.

I can almost say with 100% certainty that the pocket angles are greater than 143, + the shelf is stupid deep.
