Changing wrap on Meucci Original?

I have an original Meucci gambler, and I was thinking about changing out the wrap. How would the value change if I did that? If I put a lizard wrap on it, would the value go down?

make it a gecko

Are you a shooter or a collector? If your a shooter and it would make you more comfortable to wrap it with REAL lizard , go ahead. If your a collector and are going to bury it in a closet for 20 years , don't. Frankly ," The Gambler," unless it is one of the legendary first few with real inlaid playing cards ,(Do they exist?) even though it is an ORIGINAL, will probably never reach the status of a true collector's item. Lizard will probably enhance it's value. IMHFO. :)

Yeah . . . do the reptile thing . . .

It will probably increase its value upgrading it as a "player" cue . . . and with the lizard wrap you'll do just that . . . lots of people will pay for the older Mooch's and constantly seek them out . . .

There are a lot of folks that do great wraps here in AZB. You might want to run a post and see who's interested in doing it if you don't have someone already.

Unless you plan on keeping the cue a long time, it's best to leave it alone. The Gambler is a famous design and the Originals are collectible - don't mess it up. It may not hurt the value a lot (maybe $100) but it sure would make it harder to sell in the future.

I disagree.

The Meucci Gambler really doesnt have any collector value. There are 1000's of them and they are not rare in any sense of the word.

It is worth 3-400 and at worst it is worth 2-300. If you like the cue to play with and want to change the wrap, have at it.

I think you might be confusing that with the current Meuccis with the script logo.

The Meucci Original gambler, from the 80s, does have collector value and is worth $500-$700. I've seen plenty of them in that range sold on both the W/FS forum and Ebay.

The question is, how will that value change if I swap the wrap.

I used to collect old logo Meucci Originals - a lot of people got started with collecting that way - and I think Meucci's likely still have wider collector following than any other producton cue. I've bought and sold a good many , maybe over 50 of them.

The value will go down because if a Meucci collector picks up a Gambler with an obviously incorrect wrap. They know they will have to spend about $150 to correct it. It's $40 for a new wrap, and about $100 for a refinish (over the wrap).

I know Ken doesn't think they're collectible, and he's right that there were a lot made, but there is a collector following of these old ones, and modification need to be taken into account when you are collecting cues.

Go ahead and put what ever you want on it. You will NOT hurt the value of that cue any at all! If anything at all it will increase with a real leather wrap!
