Charley "Hillbilly" Bryant

What is the purpose of another post where you I got a tip, can't tell you what it is, ask him when you see him.

What is the value in a post telling others about a tip you received?

It is quite simple u12armresl. I just wanted to thank Charley for his kindness without giving away his information and this is my way of doing so.

If you run across Charley you can ask him for a pool lesson and/or you can ask him what he told me.

Charley didn't give me permission to give away his secrets on AZB or anywhere else. Now if he gives it up in the booth, it's all good.

I'm sorry, but why post about receiving a tip, yet not sharing it. Either don't share anything or spill the beans. I just can't conceive of any harm in passing along something that might help other members here. Otherwise, it makes you look.......selfish, or worse. I don't know, it's really in bad taste. Merry Christmas, Joey.

I am going down the line answering most of the posts as to why I started this thread. The answer is the same and as most who know me, I am not selfish or worse.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Because it was an attempt at a veiled post to let everyone know that Joey's new friend Mr. Hillbilly is available for lessons and also is now selling T shirts.

Nothing veiled at least I thought there was nothing veiled. It is quite apparent at least to me, that I was thanking Charley for his kindness.

You apparently did get it, so it couldn't have been that veiled.

BTW, what you don't know is that "Mr. Hillbilly" has been an old friend for many years. We have battled on the table and shared our love for pool for those many years.

My way is to aim cue stick tip through center of object ball (like cue ball isn't even there)

That's a good pool tip.

A similar pool tip by Danny Medina was shared with many years ago. Danny said to look through the object ball at the spot on the pocket where you wanted the object ball to go and then just shoot the cue ball to that spot.

I don't see anything objectionable about that...it's something lots of people might want to know.

I thought the same thing as you. There are a lot of professional pool players who do not give pool lessons and people are scared to ask. Very few professional pool players sell unique T-shirts and other accessories.

Apparently Watchez objects. :D

I took a few lessons from Hillbilly several years back. A super nice guy that actually has the ability to teach.

I agree onepocketron. Charley is a super nice guy and he is trying to make a living in the sport we all love.

If some people don't understand lending a helping hand to a professional pool player like Charley "Hillbilly" Bryant in this manner; well I just can't do anything for them.

People can really be kind of peculiar. The haters whine when pool players do the wrong things and when a professional pool player is trying to do the right thing, the same people find a way to piss on their righteous efforts anyway. :p It's no wonder most pro players stay the **** away from this site.

Living about 45 Min away from Hickory NC, I can tell you there are a lot more than 3 'monsters' in the area. :-). Speaking of Tony... I'm understanding that his 'Federal Vacation' will be over in a couple of more years... Like 5. Sad but as they say.. "When you sleep with dogs, you'll prolly end up with flees". Caution.. Monster 'short stops' everywhere within 100 miles of this area. If you bark, expect action in the right watering holes. 'Froggy' (Bill) is currently entertaining all 1holers. I understand Scooters road show will be making a stop thru on his presence Derby run.. Should be fun.

".... Charley, spent a month or so in this area in the late 90's and played many matches in my poolhall.

I found him to be very bright, introspective, intense, competitive and sharing. GR8 guy!!

Robbed everybody he played rotation games with, but, was just starting to dabble at Louisiania Hog Pool and that came home to roost.

He and Tony Wataon are both from Hickory, NC (population 69), Charley said another monster was from the area...whodathunk a trio like that from THERE"

I got to meet Charlie Bryant in late 2006. He was nearing completion of his book then. Larger than life and friendly character!

No idea if this is Hillbilly's "trick" but a trick to making shots that are genuinely straight in is to forget the object ball, aim the cue ball at the exact point in the pocket you want the object ball to go.

This post is still a little light on quotation marks so "aim small, miss small" if at all!

Hu(knows that one exclamation point is worth at least a full set of quotation marks!)

That's how Robert Froeschle taught his students...aim at the pocket and forget the OB.

Good stuff Hu!

Don't let those coyotes take over your place. (Aim small)

Merry Christmas my friend!

Charley has been in town a few days doing some teaching and playing a little pool. I think he has won every pool tournament he has entered since he has been here.

After giving me a thrashing (twice), he asked me if I would like a pool tip and of course I replied, "SURE!":D

You never know what pool tip you might get from someone and Charley has been writing volumes about pool for the many years I have known him so I jumped at the chance to listen to his pool tip.

Now, I have to be candid. I'm not going to tell you the pool tip that he shared with me on straight in shots. But it is something that is a unique perspective that I have never read, seen or heard from any other source and yes, it is a valuable tip.

If you know Charley, you can ask him yourself. Even if you don't know him, you can ask him and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he tells you.

Sometimes, a pool tip for one person might be old stuff rehashed or maybe something that has never been said in the same manner and it just might have a positive effect on your pool game.

Charley and his lovely wife Heather are traveling around a bit, selling their new line of T-shirts and other pool related products so you just might see them in your town some day. Heather has a pretty good deal for you creative types. Tell her about a T-shirt design that you would like to see and if they use it, you will get a free T-shirt when they are printed. Just don't send in someone else's design. You can probably reach them on Facebook without any problem if you're interested.

(Still waiting for Charley to publish his book).

I would gladly take a lesson, but I live in the Boston area and don't think he ever comes this way :(. Would love the help with straight ins but can appreciate you not sharing...

I'm confused.

Is this point of this thread to talk about a tip or Charlie Bryant?

I wonder if the other 40,000 people in Hickory knew there was only 69.

Pick one, whichever you like. Or both. Your choice.

This is just a thread meant to bring attention to one of pool's most interesting players.

That is exactly what I was going to ask. In other words this topic is to tell us that you learned something that you are not going to share with anyone. It happens to me frequently but I dont start a thread to tell you I learned something but its a secret so dont ask me what it is.

Straight in!

LOL. "THE BOOK" grows exponentially each time I see him.

JoeyA

Plenty of good info on straight ins. Try them all and choose. When I practice I always begin with easy s ins and go longer and longer. Great stroke trainer. Stop shot, draw, and toughest of all high. Good stroke on long follow shot will follow into hole. Better yet don't leave your self straight in. Angle, angle, angle. Go anywhere with angle. Met C B a few months ago at Jamaica Joes in Okc. Great player and very personable. Somehow we talked about drills. He said the first drill he has students do is throw all balls on table and begin pocketing. Any ball, anywhere but all with pocket speed. We differed on what pocket speed really was. I always believed just enough speed to make ball AND get desired shape. His drill is ball falling off edge, never hitting back of pocket! I believe his intent is to learn the natural tangent line which would change with low and English. He wants students to do this 100 times and then move to other things. Not all at once! Just a part of training. He mentioned giving lessons, but was not pushy about it.
