Charlie Williams....#1 ranked Asian player?

I watched it too and was pretty annoyed with CW's commentating. His two favorite words are "philosophy" and "clever". Through the whole match he kept saying how " filipinos are great at this, filipinos are great at that, that's the difference in how filipinos play, blah blah blah". Could he want anymore desparately to BE filipino?

At one moment, I didn't think he was going to shut up. I don't have anything against him, but that crap got annoying.

I seen a cartoon years ago. It showed a a line of restaurants. One had a sign that read "Best food in the city" the one next to it "The best food in the state" next to that " The best food in the country" then " the best in the world" then "the best in the universe" the last one read "The best food on the block". Which one would you go to?

Lee Heuwagen might also want to have a little "Action Challenge" with Charlie for the "Title" of best Asian American.

A few reliable sources told me that Lee quit playing. Don't want to spread rumors, but that is the word on the street.

Maybe the title " #1 Asian Player" has been taken and the "#1 American Player" has also been taken, so that leaves "#1 Asian-American Player" open for grabs? And the winner is... CW?

It's like when Monica Webb is referered to as the number one American player because she is behind some foreigners on the WPBA ranking list.

Thanks, I had heard that recently and couldn't figure out how she could have that title.

Guess there isn't enough money in UPA Pro Pool to support two contenders for the title of best US Asian. :-)

Bummer about Lee though if true, he's a great player. I beat him in the first round of a short set tournament in Rapid City once and he came all the back and won the event.

I was at the summit of pool?? tourney in Queens a few years ago and I might be wrong but I think that CW beat Efren twice in that tounament.

I was at that event. After the match Efren was speaking to someone in his native language and the two of them starting laughing. I was with a Pinoy friend and asked him what they said. He said, Efren said "I let him win because his mother was here watching". Now, I don't know if Efren was making excuses or if my friend translated it correctly. I am just repeating what I was told.

When Charlie is in stroke he can play real strong. He is definately a pro level player. I don't understand why alot of people think he can't play.

I didn't mean to give the impression that I think Charlie can't play. He plays great.

Good enough to beat any living human in any single set at any time. But good enough to sustain a level that has been attained by people who are "ranked" lower than himself? No. He isn't that good and he knows it.

The WHOLE point of this thread is that the UPA ranking isn't really reflective of the true strength of the pool world.

I guess you have to start somewhere but if you choose to believe that the UPA rankings are an indication of how good someone is then you have to accept that Frank Alvarez is a better player than Thorsten Hohmann because Frank is ranked higher.

The fact is that while Charlie IS the number one Asian player on the UPA list, the UPA list is hardly reflective of the strength of all the Asian players who play in America and throughout the world because the UPA events do not attract those players consistently enough to attain rank.

In Germany we had a ranking system that was weighted to reflect the size of the fields - a larger field granted more points than a smaller field. This way the ranking truly relfected the relative strength of all players. The ones who simply attended each event but didn't go far were not rewarded with the same points for smaller (weaker) fields as when they played in events with larger fields.

Saying the Charlie is the number one Asian or Asian-American player is not only disingenious but it also is like saying that Yang is the number one player in the world because he won the Guiness Tour. A tour that was closed for the most part, that didn't have the participation of the fan's choice for best player in the world, and was totally closed to all non Asians.

At least this is how I see it. When the UPA ranking is full of the best players in the country who all participate in all the events then I will take the rankings their seriously. Until then it's only really good for marketing purposes.

I am now proclaiming that I am the #1 bald, bar table, 5'10" and under, size 9.5 shoe, player in the world. (In the carpet industry). Oh, and while I am proclaiming, throw in the big table too.

Several times in a row? Would you please provide a list of these wins.

I don't recall exactly when it was (3 years ago maybe) but I do recall Charlie having his cues lost by the Airline and having to use borrowed equipment during the event. I believe it was the Summit of Pool in New York and he did beat Efren twice in the event to win the tourney.

Charlie plays (played) a lot better than many people give him credit IMO and I feel that he would be winning on a pretty regular basis had he not chosen to focus more on being a promoter than a player (a good choice if you ask me)

I just looked it up, I believe this was the tournament:

A good win in a strong field (although any win is 'good' when you beat Efren twice)
