I made Allen Hopkins a case once upon a time. He insisted on paying for it and I insisted that he shouldn't. We finally compromised on a good road story. Only thing is that it took him about a decade to pay off.
Mostly it was my fault because for the first ten years or so I didn't really socialize after hours at the SBE. So I didn't see Allen much diring the show and when I did he was running around.
Once I found the bar and the after parties I would catch Allen with more time. And getting a story had become a running joke between us.
So anyway finally I got him in the right position and frame of mind and got my story.
Allen was on the road with a fresh stakehorse. Good backer but green about life on the road. The first night out Allen gets a guy into a game for small stakes, say $10 a game or so and it escalates until Allen has won 5k.
The next night they are at a different pool room and again Allen starts out with a small stakes game. The backer pulls Allen off to the side and says, "why are you playing for chump change when we won 5k last night?"
Allen says, "We didn't make the room rent today yet."
