What is the benefit of using deer antler as a ferrule material? I have no problem with it so long as it is very white and doesn't have the black specs in it like you so often see.

To me the material seems dense and heavy which is typically what most players are looking to avoid. This is the reason for all the low deflection shafts as to have as light a front end as poosble correct????

Opinions please.

Thanks

Kevin

Most of the antler I've cut up has been grey and figured. It looks like stone, which I do like. This one was all white and somewhat translucent though. The hit feels the same, and I didn't notice any more deflection than juma. It plays pretty sporty if you ask me. Also, from what I've read, it is stronger than ivory, so cracking might be less likely. Although I did notice right after I turned them round, some ferrules have some very light and small fractures in them. I thought it was just grain at first, but I'm pretty sure they are fractures on the inside of the core wall. After I installed this one and polished it a bit, they are not very noticable. I'm gonna play with it for a while and break and hit em hard and see how the ferrule holds up before I sell any of them.

Antler is one of natures only materials (and best, imo) that is designed & evolved specifically for impact. Ivory is not. You'll be hard pressed to break or even crack an antler ferrule by playing pool. If two 250lb. deer can charge toward one another & collide head on without breaking antler, you aren't gonna do it by hitting a billiard ball. Not only does it have incredible impact resistance, but has high sheer strength, too. Deer lock antlers & twist & turn & drag one another around, without the antlers breaking. They polish the antler by shredding small trees with them. Pretty incredible stuff.

That's something that I can get behind and have supported.
It's probably not going to be the most sought after by the L/D crowd but if the hit is something special,
it may be worth the trade-off. Hit means a lot to me, even more than L/D.
A player can & WILL adapt.
