Chicago pool happenings

The owner of 5000 is an avid billiard player and they used to have a 3 cushion tournament on Saturday nights. Every time I've been there there has been players on the billiard tables.
That's great, it has been years since I have played 3C.
I do remember most of what SJM showed me.
It seems every time I go to Chicago area I find pool rooms. Certainly not like it used to be but not a pool desert either.

Also, don't sleep on 5000 years Carom billiards on Dempster in Morton Grove. Maps has it at 17 minutes from O'hare.

Several billiards tables and a lot of pool tables. It's a great practice room and the equipment is in great condition. Diamond bar tables and several 9' tables.

I have spent some time in that area over the years - had relatives near there. That room wasn’t open the last time I had occasion to be there for a few days I don’t think. Might not be convenient to downtown etc… but the hotels and restaurants near there, around Old Orchard always seemed to work.

It was STONEY Island, which means you were on the South Side, and the cop did you a big favor.

Like all cities, Chicago has safe and unsafe areas. I used to live in Cicero, back when it was still a mob town and very safe at all hours of the day or night. But, if you got on the wrong side of Cicero Avenue after dark, you were dead meat.

If you are worried about crime, there are online crime maps and gang maps, but best to ask the locals. Chicago is very neighborhoody.
You're right, it was Stoney Island!!!! Cicero is on the north side, isn't it? Whenever I saw the street sign for Cicero I always took it to mean we were now entering Chicago. What is Stoney Island? A road, a town, an ice cream stand????

The drive from Midway up Cicero to Chris’s goes thru a pretty bad area. As bad an area as I can remember almost anywhere in the US.

How could you tell while driving? What was visibly so dangerous about it?

If you are driving on what's referred to as "surface streets" you can absolutely tell the kind of area you are in. I could tell from I94 that I did not want to hang out at Cabrini Green back in the 90's.

Lifelong Chicagoan here. Yes, there is crime and violence. It's wildly unpredictable. Obviously if you go in a high crime area you are increasing your exposure to it. Regardless, you can get shot/carjacked in any neighborhood, good or bad, at any time of day.
I live in an area where there are shootings, I have witnessed them and have plenty of Ring camera footage. It's so quick. One day I was doing dishes, 3 pm, I see some kids chasing and shooting at another kid. SECONDS LATER a bus pulls up, people get off, walking in that exact spot talking on their phones, oblivious of what just happened there. Cars driving by like nothing happened.
Plenty of greatness here, you can't live your life in fear of leaving your house or hotel. If you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time then so be it. Surrender your wallet/car/phone and live to hit another ball....

50 million people visit Chicago every year and they are not cowering in their hotels after dark. Grow up.
