The best players in the city play at a couple of rooms...one on the northside (Chris's Billiards on Milwaukee), and one on the southside (Red Shoes, in Alsip). Several AzBr's play at both...

There is a little known pub that has two antique 9' table within a half mile of Wrigley called the Ten Cat. Its just south of Irving on Ashland. Jeff Carter used to play there frequently when he lived in Chicago. Worth a stop if this would interest you.
Ten Cat is a great little spot. Definitely not your typical bar. They take care of their tables, and they hardly ever play any of the typical bar anthem music. Some decent players hang out there, but if you're going to be there on a weekday, you'll run into leagues 4 nights a week. Good people, good times, and when the tamale guy comes around, I'd definitely recommend snatching up a few.

You might think that in the last 100 years the "better players" would have won a championship wouldnt you? There is probably no sports team in all the world, in the history of sports, that has been shut out of a championship for 100 years.
The Cub management has been hiring crop dusters to fly over the North side and spray powerful doses of Optimism Gas on the evidence denying Cub fans for the last 80 years.

You might want to pm bestkites as to Chicago poolhalls. He is in the Chicago area this week checking out poolhalls and other things. He has been to Red Shoes and is probably going to the Illinois Billiard Club this Thursday. He also met with Bobby Hunter and is going to try to meet Darren Hill today. He may have gone to Chris's II last night and he might go to Chris's on Milwaukee tonight.
By the way, if your friends want to go to Red Shoes or Illinois Billiard Club, I am there on Monday and Thursday respectively and would be happy to introduce them and get them a game if they wanted one.

The other table is also a Brunswick, but it's an 8 footer, and it has B U C K E T S for pockets...
Nice place to hang out. Some pretty decent players go there, and the owner (Richard) is a custom cue maker, to boot.

Forgot about all of the leagues, so timing is everything.
Ooohh, the tamale guy, A must if you are lucky enough.

This is true (listen for the sound when a ball just falls in *klunk*), but it still plays pretty fair, especially during the summer when it's humid. There are some people who are convinced that the pocket shims on that 8 footer are made out of rail rubber. I'm not sure if that's true, but I do know that unless you're running a ball down the rail, you'd better not hit the rail on the way in if you expect to make it.

Chris' on Milwaukee is where the better players play as you say. It's a little run down, but it's as authentic of a pool hall as you're ever going to find, very historic. You may even see someone famous in there on occasion as well, to the pool world that is. And it's BYOB.PETARD said:
Yeah, avoid Ten Cat at almost all cost. Although they did just recently redo their tables, it's not the place for tourists to play pool. They do have a nice old 1920'/1930's 9' Medalist, and a Commercial 8', but the locals are freaks (as in weirdo's), and you'll spend the night waiting to get back on the table. And other than a few locals, there is nobody worth seeing there. The bar is often overcrowded with little seating area around the two tables, and it's really not worth the trip.
Chris' is the place to go if you're on the north side. Couple of hot spots downtown too, but they'll likely be busy and pricey if you're not from a big city. All in all, Chris'. Roughly 4600 N. Milwaukee.
