Nice video, but ...

Efren Reyes is "The Magician" and nobody else can have that nickname. That said, Melling has an almost Efren-esque level of imagination at the table, so it's no surprise that some have, sacrilegiously, chosen to call him that.

When Chris won the Derby City 9ball in 2018, he survived a very stiff test in the semifinal with Dennis Orcullo. It was in this match that he may have displayed the finest kicking I've ever seen, kicks that were up to Efren standards. Onlooker Alex Pagulayan was going nuts over a couple of the kicks Melling managed to execute with the match riding on it and Dennis Orcullo simply could not believe his eyes.

Can't tell you whether it is on video but, especially given the size of the moment, this was the finest display of kicking that Melling has ever produced. He'd pull another rabbit out of his hat in the final, rallying from 8-3 behind vs Morra.

Melling is definitely one of the best kickers of all time in pool.

I am a big Efren fan, and I also thought it was "odd" to re-use his nickname at first, but I think Chris has probably earned the right to share the nickname.

What do others think about this?

there is a top 16 snooker player, the magician,
who like melling has a last name that starts with M
but says he doesn’t really like the name so much
and if a better one comes along that he’d take it

I think that Reyes isn't playing pro anymore, so it's fine for Melling to use this nickname now as he's the most "magician" player in the field. When he will retires, we all be trying to find a successor and I'll probably call the new one "magician" too. It's a nickname that feels like a title.

yea, similar. probably the ones who gave rodney and ronnie the nicknames (often announcers) didn't know of the other, or the other wasn't very famous yet
Why am I thinking there was one more Rocket? Possibly Ellin or Basavich. Must have read it someplace. Typo prolly.

Pool also has two Icemans. Mika most famously nowadays, but Larry Hubbard had it first.

But my all time favorite nickname is for Ervolino - The Velvet Foghorn. There's only one of those.
