I watch a lot of streaming stuff and seem to also watch some kind of pool videos on youtube etc. I used to run a long hdmi cable from my laptop to my tv but finally broke down and bought a chromcast. Now I hit a button and it appears on my tv. Also allows me to continue on the computer in new tab without losing the pic. For mere $35 its money well spent if you watch streams much.

Thank you for sharing that bit of info. I have been wondering about how cool the Chromecast is. For 35 bucks, you can't beat it. :)

I think this is going to eventually blow those overpriced cable services out of the water.

My Comcast cable bill is $230 a month, which includes high-speed Internet and telephone. Still, $230 a month is brutal.

I'm glad to see this kind of technology come to the fore.

My Chromecast works great for youtube, but mine wouldn't work when I tried to use it for "Live Streaming".
I only tried it once. Does yours work for this?

Thanks-
Karate

Mine works great off of my laptop. I use chrome as my browser. Not sure how it would work with IE, Firefox or Safari. Just bought another one to take with me when I travel. They are $29.99 at Amazon right now.

It was on sale last week at bestbuy for $30 with free shipping but now it is back to $35 but also with free shipping:

Here is a video of how it works:

If you go to the Best Buy links and watch the "how it works" video it mentions that it can stream any web page if you download the extra app. I don't know anything about this product, but that intrigued me. If you can stream anything on your webpage and then cast it using that additional app, then it is well worth the money. If it is limited to just the apps included, then it is still pretty cool, just a bit less so.

Love my Chromecast.. Just got finished watching back to back movies, and only used my phone for EVERYTHING! Can't beat wireless devices that actually do what they claim to do.. Haven't tried a live stream yet though...

Does it work for a regular hp desktop pc?

It works off anything. iPhone , android phone , iPad , any tablet with the google play store , windows or Mac. Honestly it couldn't be easier to set up.

See my biggest gripe about the chromecast is that it requires a wifi network to work. That part kills me; would have been better if I was able to use my phone's built in hotspot. For 100% mobility, it needs it.

230 a month! Yikes!

Did you order everything they have, including all the pay channels?

I have the basic tier HD package from my cable provider and it's about $130 after all the taxes etc.. added in.

I will probably kill the HD service as almost everything I watch is online either in Hulu or Netflix, aside from all the pool stuff.

Another trick I used a few times, to lower your payments, is to look for a "new customer special" from another company, then go online to a service chat, if they offer it, and ask them what can they do to help lower payments because so and so company is giving you $100 for the same thing and you were thinking about switching. 95% of the time, they can switch you over to another price.

I lowered by bill by $50 a month by doing this. People say to not call up the company but use the online chat options because those online chat people are contractors often overseas who are less worried about the company making more money and are more worried about a customer leaving totally so they would be easier to talk to about a lower price. When I did that, I got 0 push back, they right away checked for a lower price for me, sent me a new agreement to my email, and the new prices started immediately. You may need to sign a 1 or 2 year contact but you could save a lot of money doing that.

Another thing I want to try is Magic Jack, I have read many good reviews about the service. Once my contract with the cable company is up, I will look into just basic cable service (for the kids) and internet from them, with Magic Jack for phone.

here is the deal

To the guy who said wifi as the only con "get wifi" majority of device attachment are for use at home i.e. viewing tv on your iPad or iPhone with optimum, other than that get a sling box and watch tv where ever you go in the world that has internet access. (assuming you didn't have wifi, not a bash)

About ChromeCast:
1) For the price get the thing you can't lose. Once you get the chrome cast app (which you don't need all it does is add an icon to youtube or let you device know what you have a chrome cast)

2) It only works with Google Chrome (when using a computer of corse) thus only allowing you to stream youtube and netflix via a hand held device. (in short only google affiliated things)

3) Google has announced that they will be adding more apps to the list (there's only 3 now) early next year "very early"

4) Unless using a PC you will not be able to take advantage of the fullscreen look unless you have Maverick (Mac). "do i need to explain this?"

5) Writers block

Tips: You do not have to switch to chrome just to use the device, meaning, continue to use your usual browser and just keep chrome for when you want to stream something to your tv. That being said and to touch on (4) you can stream a stream to your TV but it would be your desktop (called Tab Casting, still in beta "for the most part) making your TV a second monitor, so you just full screen, go to the couch and relax. If you want to continue using your computer "not sure why, but i guess for minor stuff back and for between sets blah blah blah). If you dual screen like myself then you can full screen one and use the other. More writers block.

what you may not know "most people" is that you can get an extension for chrome that allows you to stream anything that's on your computer, WOW, WHAT? up, your C: drive opens up in a Tab which you can now browse just like normal and now "like me" stream the movie from your computer to the TV (i mainly use this for my daughter "or the misses" so that now i don't need to burn a dvd anymore "unless i have too" because i download all of my movies "oh ship wait no i don't just kidding". The biggest problem to this is that on a mac that file needs to be MP4 "i just haven't worked around or looked into that yet", I have PC's but its not my main so can't comment what windows does about that but since i've been doing this computer thing for a long time i have/use a program called Handbreak which turns any file in to any file so i turn that MKV file in to a MP4 in about 3 mins flat and BAM!

guys i work nights, got off work at like 7:00 am went to the gym and now i'm here, my brain is freezing up. I'll answer anything i can that might of been messed up or missed. $35 people get the dam thing.

Ha, just went back to this thing and realize how crazy i was talking due to lack of sleep. But no one has been back since then so this is just a back up incase.

Watching this review, it looks like you can "cast" your Chrome browser from your smartphone onto your TV and then just pull up a streaming website, and watch a live stream on your TV.

What can it do that a cable from laptop can't do? Does it get TAR PPV, Acu-Stats, and the other streams? Johnnyt
