Chuck Guard For Hightower Lathe

I've been using this "coffee can" cover guard on my Hightower lathe for sometime now when finishing cues. It keeps the finish off the jaws and my fingers out of the chuck jaws. Well today, I didn't use it and guess what? Yep,
I wasn't paying attention and it got me. I figure by posting a picture of it (the guard, not my finger) it might drill into my dense brain (after the throbbing goes away) why I made it in the first place. If you don't have one, you might think of making one.

Very good idea for any Lathe!!!!

Thanks

Goodness! What fun is having a lathe if you can't show off your bruised and bleeding fingers once in awhile. I know your pain as I've done it dozens of times over the years on my tip lathe. I sometimes wonder how I still have most of my fingers.

good idea for finishing

That is definitely a good idea for finishing. I let a finger brush the chuck of a 13x40 metal lathe spinning counter-clockwise at 750 or so years ago. Sucked two more into the chuck in an instant. The lord looked after a fool and I only had three numb and slightly damaged fingers and a fingernail ripped right through the middle and torn half off. After that I never have a problem remembering to keep my fingers out of the chuck!

Those are great to use, the only problem is you get used to them being there, the one time you don't use it, guess what... Sometimes I think we get a little comfortable knowing there's a guard, that we get a little careless, and then when we don't use it, we pay for it. I just rapped my index finger tonite while buffing a shaft, I was lucky that it only hit the tip.

lol. i do it all the time. brings tears to me eyes. hurts so bad i cant ever curse. you know it hurts when you belled and it doesnt even break skin...

reminds me of a joke about a guy taking a dump with no paper including a hammer and a hole in the wall that reads instant finger cleaner.

i love that joke

That's a good idea for keeping finish of the jaws. Especially the bondo looking lid that wraps over the jaws. As far as the knuckle busters go, I have become use to those on the hightower. They really don't phase me anymore. My little metal lathe is another story, It can take chunks out, especially at high rpm's.

My dog on utility knife got me good about 8 months ago though. It started to fall off the lathe, and I hit the back of It with My right hand trying to catch It, but that only increased the speed as It stuck into My left birdy knuckle. It stuck right between the knuckle, but only went in about 1/4", so didn't seem real bad at the time, but to this day I still can't close that finger all the way. About half way is all I can close It. Got any tricks for dumb asses like me that like to stick razor knives in their knuckles:D Maybe keeping it in a safer place huh:p

I know a fellow who hangs out with Sherm Adamson. He was in Sherm's shop grinding something on an 8 inch two wheel grinder and it started to fall off the stand so Darrell tried catching it. When I seen him after he got out of the hospital he looked like he had crawled into a hole with a Badger. One other time this same fellow was driving over-the-road hauling dry cement from MI to Cinti. The fuel gauge never worked in the truck so he opened a tank and used his lighter to see how much fuel he had left. He spent a lot of time in the hospital over that one.

Ouch!

The grinder thing is more what this was, just instinct to try and catch It, and what I ended up doing was actually smacking the butt of the knife with My right, and the tip stuck in My left knuckle. I probably could'nt have done that on purpose to try and stick It in a piece of wood or something just screwing around, without many attempts at It. But I line drove that sucker right into My knuckle with one try. It wasn't that bad looking, hurt alittle, but didn't bleed that bad. 8 months later still hurts when I bend It though, and will only close halfway no matter how hard I grit, and try to close It, so I must have hit something in there.

I probably wouldn't make the lighter in the gas tank mistake though:eek:, but I know how easily It can be to get alittle loopy feeling one day and do something You know You shouldn't do. When My father had His bussiness he had an old truck like that, that the fuel gage didn't work on. The fill tube went straight down to the tank, so We just checked It with a wooden down. I knew better, but I think I can remember Him warning Me not to use anything metal to check the fuel with, for fear It could cause a static charge or spark in the tank.

I feel for those guys, I hate to see stuff like that happen to anyone.

These were big either 50 or 100 gallon saddle tanks. I guess he thought it wouldn't flame up since it was diesel fuel but he said he was holding the lighter over the hole trying to peer in and he said a little swirling flame like a small tornado was above the tank and the next thing he remembered was being in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was burned really badly but still it's funny every time it's brought up in a conversation with both the grinder and the lighter.

Wow, poor guy. I can only imagine 2 words trying to come out of mouth while watching the flame swirl down, and not enough time to spit them out. You would know at that second that Your goose was probably already cooked.

There's always a risk out there just waiting to bite. Alot of them can get us even when We know better.
