Mental Side of the Game

First of all I want to say Thanks CJ, I think what you are doing on AZ and on Facebook is awesome. You are in a perfect position to articulate and communicate on different levels of what the game of pool has to offer. You have the ability to speak matter of factly to both the novice and the professionals and you are doing a great job!

I am intrigued with your backround in NLP, I studied it back in the late 90's and am curious to know if you now apply the principles in your play and your teachings?

I am all ears if you have advice on the mental side of the game and was wondering if you use anchors to trigger yourself to play in the zone.
I play league pool and play in tournaments and have trouble keeping my mental focus. I tend to dislike league pool and get geared up mentally for tournaments. Do you have any advice on how to frame things mentally for: practice, league pool and tournament play, both team and individual? Also, just curious how you frame things mentally with your pre-shot routine? I always try to keep things simple in competition and run on auto-pilot and when I'm practicing I'm in more of an analytical mode. It would be cool to hear how you frame things for both.

Thanks in advance!

I do use NLP in my everyday life and I would not have achieved what I have without that knowledge. I had the opporunity to study under Richard Bandler before his giant success with training Tony Robbins who wrote 'Unlimited Power' and 'Controlling the Giant Within'....Neuro Linguistic Programming is a model to understand how words are used to control the mind. You can find out a lot more by doing searches on Google and just let your intuition lead you.....your unconscious knows what you need.

I would suggest two things for your mental curiousity....the first is a book I always recomend because it gives you a founation in understanding how to become absorbed into what you're doing. That's the book 'Zen and the Art of Archery' ... I would recommend reading it twice, once a week (I've read it 6-7 times in my life and always get "new meaning" because we tend to learn in layers)... I would also suggest some form of meditation, there's many to choose from, and I'd narrow it down to the ones that focus on breathing (anapana is a good oneanapana meditation) - that's a good start, check back in two weeks and I'll let you know some choices on building from there...aloha

Since I have never been instructed by a professional player, Like Ratta I have to go with "All".

Thanks CJ and AZ

This series should open a path for better play and hopefully bring more folks into the game.

New AZBILLIARDS Video Series "THE 7Cs" 'The Game is the Teacher'

Control and Center.....

You got it...I look forward to doing this video series, it's pretty challenging to explain some of these techniques without "visuals". :woot:

desire, determination, discipline, dedication, drive

Hey Lee, welcome back. Havent heard from you in a long time.

There are some really interesting threads going on right now.

Especially the thread covering how to hit the object ball off center. Some folks just are not getting it.

Again, welcome back.

And, some "get it" a lot more than you realize, but choose not to say anything more about it because it may help some on here. If it doesn't, it will readily be found out and dismissed. There are requirements to using CJ's way that were never discussed on here, yet are VERY applicable. So, just because some disagree doesn't necessarily equate to "they just don't get it". ;)

7 C's

Consistancy! Is there a secret? Why did that mis pop-up & I do not, after the fact, know why? Many times I do know why, but once in a while = Why???????????

Quiet mind

I am getting better at having what I describe as a quiet mind but am always searching for ways to beat back the distractions and to focus on the task at hand. Sometimes I have a focus that is incredible. During those times, my opponent can whine all he wants and I just increase the pressure on him by playing even better. Sometimes though, I allow my opponent's comments to enter my mind and occupy space there. That's one of the times when I lose focus.

I practice deep breathing exercises/meditation and even hypnosis from time to time and find they help to calm my mind. Othertimes it seems that even little distractions can enter my mind. I'm just wondering if you will be offering anything specific as to how to deal with distractions.

If there is one thing internet forums should never be used for then it is to help people.

Observing our thoughts like someone else's experiment

Dealing with distractions is really about making judgments....some are helpful some are hurtful, but YOU are allowing yourself to make that decision, no one else.....I suggest you "just observe your thoughts"...don't judge or even acknowledge them, treat them like a river that you are standing by and all your thoughts are like the water passing by....clean water, dirty water, rough, smooth, tin cans, garbage, back to clean, blue ON AND ON....we have an average of between 30 Thousand and 50 Thousand thoughts per day.....and only about 2% are useful at all and only 2% of those do we even act on....most just loop through our minds causing worry, sad, unhappy, restless, irritable, bored, discontent etc ON AND ON....when you start to understand this you can become pro active.....does this mean you can "think them away".....not at all, you have to observe them away...treat them like a science experiment that you want to watch, but not become personally involved with.....and there's ways to do this that I'm not going to get into right here, right now.

This is already good stuff; a general request from me would be to get into the "both sides" of the equation. I know we should be focusing on what we should be doing and not what we should not be doing but if you tell us what we should not be doing it may help (I know it will for me) to identify those things and more easily "popup squash" those things; I hope I don't sound crazy.
