This story is dedicated to my ole buddy Scotty Townsend that was a great friend and tremendous pool player. We battled against each other for days at a time, but I always it when we were on the same team.

This story is about a trip to Las Vegas when Scotty and I was on the same side....... what a trip, we hit em with a serious "one\two knockout punch".....and the party was on!

Scotty lit up a place

Scotty lit up a place. There was an energy there when Scotty was in a bar, which is where I most often bumped into him. Played him twice, both times when I was on the shorts. Scotty took care of that for me! I loaded up enough money to run awhile and went back looking for him. I took losing politely but I sure as hell didn't like it!

Scotty had moved on and it wasn't too long after that when I drifted away from pool a few decades. It wasn't until many years later that I learned the full story about Scotty. Still would have liked to have a real battle with him when we were both near our peaks but wasn't to happen. Near misses with a few more players, we can't play them all!

There wasn't a better man to gamble with than Scotty!

Back in the 80s there were several of us that were on the road most of the time and we'd bump into each other in some of the most unusual places. I've played Scotty literally all over the country, sorry you didn't have the chance to battle with him again.

Scotty Townsend was a hell of a player. I believe I last saw him play in a PBT event at Great Gorge, NY in 1997. I remember telling Johnny Archer back then that Scotty used to be a stone cold killer. Johnny's reply back then was "he still is." Scotty had a very real chance to beat anyone and was never a guy you wanted to draw.

Scotty literally wrestled and killed alligators, pool players were a cinch!!

At a pool tournament at Shooters-Olathe in 2007 that was loaded with monsters, late on Saturday Warren Kiamco offered the wild 8 playing 9-ball races to Scotty. Scotty declined the wild 8.
Scotty immediately said he would play Kiamco even, then scorched him straight away.

Btw, Scotty’s first cousin is cuemaker Andy Gilbert. They grew up together.

I am sure spell checker or voice to text got you there! Alligators became allegros. What Scotty often did if he found himself a bit short was catch a five to seven foot alligator bare handed and throw it in the trunk of his car. First place he came to he would sell it for seventy-five or a hundred bucks. That was gas and a start, all Scotty needed to be going again!

I kinda filled in because JoeyA hasn't been around much. Joey is an old friend of Scotty's and between him and Buffalo, another less than frequent visitor, could tell more Scotty stories than anybody.

I have seen Scotty working his way around a fifth or quart of something stout as he played his way to a win or very high finish in a tournament. Another time he was keeping count of beers for some reason. Rolling in at the start of the event Friday afternoon, he had drank 72 beers by about noon Sunday and was still in the winners bracket! Another one he placed high in or won.

Scotty won so often that it wasn't anything special when he did. When he lost was more unusual. I remember Buffalo putting a $100 bounty on both Scotty and Jamie F. one tournament. Buff's employee and all around good guy Bobby H scooped both bounties and the overall for a very nice payout that weekend.

Ah yes the old Playboy Club-What a strange location. Could that have been 96? I was there the year Jimmy Wetch surprisingly won and it is listed as 96 in Wiki. I left the arena with TK and Tony and it started to flurry and it was the first time TK had seen snow.

Yes, that was the one. Looks like I got the year wrong, for it was, indeed, Jimmy Wetch who snapped off the title.

He was as old school as they came, boots, cowboy hat and some whiskey

Scotty wasn't the type of player that liked getting spots, his stake horse would have go make him play those games. He was as old school as I've seen in that respect, like many of us he didn't fit in well with today's cucked culture.
