Classic 1970's Images Of "the Magician" In $$-Action-$$

Here's some early images from the 1970's of Efren in a $$$ game with the author of the classic book, "BILLIARDS -Hustlers and Heroes, Legends & Lies and the Search for Higher Truth on the Green Felt". In the book he describes in detail how his match-up with the then #2 player in the Philippines went.

I currently have a copy of this classic book up for sale in the for sale threads. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=94175

Cool pictures.

The way people stand around the table is the same way the sometimes do at One Side and Side Pockets in Manila and Quezon City. It's just an amazing atmosphere, and every poolplayer needs to experience to play under those conditions once in a life ;) I was lucky enough to play Efren Reyes at Side Pockets with people everywhere around the table. Unfortunately no pictures, but I have them saved in my brain :)

Where'd my image go? Here it is again...

I have yet to play him myself, but look forward to the day.

It's no different than in most bars that have pool tables and people play for money I've played in. People bumping you, walking in your shot line, loud people and music, to name just a few distractions. I loved it myself. That's why I laugh when I hear you have to be real quiet at a pro tournament. Yeah, but how often do you see the Magician in action like this from his early days?

In the book it talks about how the person in the first photo is writing down all the bets coming in from around the room on the table with a piece of chalk. I wonder if they still do that there.

Ask Jay, he's there, now.

Yeah, I just read that on here somewhere else. It sounds like he's having a blast. I guess that's the place to go to find pool elevated to a high place in a society. It must be quite the atmosphere...

Great pics! Thanks for sharing.

Sure... This book has a lot of pictures from back in the 70's, as well as older pics & history of the game, diagrams and many stories and first hand experiences. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of the game and it's colorful history.
