Cleaning tips with water

Lots of threads on cleaning shaft, cue, felt and balls. But didn't find anything on tip cleaning.

My question is: is it harmful to the leather tip to clean it with damp paper towel?

I started doing this a couple weeks ago, but I have been miscuing more often. Don't know if it is just my stroke or it has something to do with the leather.

The tip I was cleaning was a Kamui Black M.

Scuff the tip, you've probably made it glaze over 10x faster now, just scuff it and you should be good.

you're completely changing the physical properties of your tip with all that water

I want to clean the tip before putting the shaft back into the case. So I'd be doing it quite often. Scuffing will clean it, but it will also wear down the tip quite fast. Is there another way to do this that wouldn't harm the tip? (if cleaning it with damp towel does indeed harm the tip).

SPLICEDPOINTS,

i wipe the chalk off of the tips of my cues every time, before i put them back in my cue case.

I just break down my cue, slide the butt into the case, then wipe or spin the tip of the shaft on my jeans, down by my ankle.

Why not just carry a piece of cloth in your case and wipe the tip on that? You NEVER want to use water on a tip unless your burnishing the sides and even then it should be a very small amount and never on the top of the tip.

You're glazing the tip just as a previous poster mentioned.

why don't you just put a piece of papertowel or napking around the tip, put a rubber band on it to hold it in place then put the shaft in the case? why clean it everytime; can't be good for the tip...

does not hurt the tip, in any way, when you wipe the chalk off.

I keep a microfiber cloth in my case to wipe my cues off including the tip every time I play.

Lots of good advice here. Thanks everyone.

I suspected it might have been the water that's causing me to miscue. I didn't use to miscue this much.

I think I'll carry a small piece of magic eraser and just twirl the tip against it when i'm done playing. This way I get to clean the tip and lightly scuff it at the same time.

Like others, I just grab a paper towel from the John or a napkin from the bar and wipe it down. No need to wet it, you're not going to eat off it. You're just trying to get the excess chalk off so it doesn't transfer onto the case lining where it may then transfer onto your shaft. A couple of swipes or twists of the napkin is all it takes.

BTW, I wouldn't want anyone to wipe their tip off on the carpet in my own home, so I don't do it anywhere else either.

Yep. I usually ask the waitress for a couple of extra napkins when she brings me my drink. I use them to wipe my tips off at the end of the night.

I blame it on the tip.
I think those Kamui Blacks tips miscue more than any other tip I have seen.
But that is just my opinion.

Is this the first time you have wiped your shaft/tip with a damp towel? What about the tips before? Did you have the miscue issue then?

We all have a different version of you wiping your shaft from water soaked towel dripping water all over the place to a very lightly damp, almost dry towel. Cleary only you know how much you are or are not soaking this tip.
