Update: I was corrected, this isn’t Ronnie O’s cue, but rather his opponent’s, Anthony McGill. Ronnie is still playing wood.

This from a recent match. When did he switch to CF? And what’s up with snooker players and their mushroomed tips? Do they not care, or do they see some advantage to it?

lots of snooker player's tips look like their dog chewed on it. doesn't faze them a bit. They are really un-picky when it comes to equip. They might use same cue for 20+ yrs. They change tips with a sharp knife and a lil sandpaper. And then go run 100pts. Simple.
the cue is more tool than decoration for them

My Best Guess disclaimer. 😉
Seems to me that it is functional. Snooker players have a chance to earn significantly more than pool players. Different players have different preferences in tip hardness. Mushroom looking tips are perhaps softer and most likely the mushroom head is to soften the tip on extreme spin shots. The smaller and lighter balls could be a factor in tip choice.

Probably this match. That is McGill shooting.

And here is Ronnie in that same match:

Figured out how I made that mistake. At 8:10 in the video, McGill walks nearly off-screen on the right, then disappears, and a player immediately gets down on a shot on the left side of the screen (could only see his cue). I wasn’t paying much attention, and assumed McGill sat down and Ronnie had come to the table… but it was a bad cut/edit. That’s when they zoomed in on the cue. Mea culpa.

Oh, and Ronnie has much better tip hygiene.
