I found this from another thread:

I recently switched to a closed bridge after many years of playing most shots with an open bridge, I have noticed an improvement in all my long shots but especially the straight in shots. I think it must be from hitting the cue ball more accurately.

I happen to agree, but it would interesting to see what people here on AzB prefer -- closed bridge or open.

I have exactly the opposite story! I played for years with a closed bridge, then a few years ago switched to an open bridge and noticed great results. I would rather shoot the long tough shots with an open bridge! I'm much more accurate with the open, and i think it's because i feel like i'm looking down the barrel of a rifle.

I use both , prefer closed but use open when the shot dictates.

So . . . add both to your poll. :)

I prefer the open bridge for most shots, however if I need to put a little mustard on the shot then I will go with the closed bridge.

The open bridge has the advantage of allowing you to use the shaft as a gun sight and also reduces the friction between your fingers and the shaft.
Giving you a little more control on the delicate shots.

The closed bridge is more stable when using more power or spin and is best for long shots.

I use both as well, I think as long as the bridge is solid, it doesnt matter.. the grip hand is much more important. I came to this conclusion after watching bert, and his one handed exercise, when I tried it and completed what he had ask I changed my view of the brigehand..

I think he is right, the bridgehand is a merely a guide, the power is in the grip hand.

I concur.....

exactly

I'm strictly an open bridge guy. Anytime I see a "bridge closed" sign I turn around and go back.

I used the open exclusively until a couple of weeks ago. Now I use both. The closed helps me on the long straight shots too.

What bridge to use & when!

I agree completely!....."a most informative post for this thread!"

I use both. It just depends on the shot. For most shots the open bridge is find since you are mostly either stun, easy draw or easy follow. However, if I am in a situation where I really need to juice the cue ball, I will use a closed bridge.

On power draw shots, my cue digs into the felt after I hit the ball. So with a open bridge, the cue will pop up off the table
