I've heard of several instances where makers refused to build a cue for a customer. Maybe the design or wood combination was just horrible and won't work (due to weight, odd construction, etc.), maybe the customer wanted you to incorporate an inferior point blank or material/wood, maybe the maker just didn't want something that ugly getting out on the street with their name on it.

Does anyone have any humorous stories about these kind of situations they would be willing to share (withholding names, of course....can be hypothetical even). :)

Aside from possibly being humorous, this kind of thread can also be educational for readers/potential customers thinking of having a unusual cue built.

Got one to tell myself....hope to get back online later and type it up.

I had a lady that wanted me to make her a green cue. She wanted the whole cue green. I said i couldnt do it because i didnt know of any wood that was green like the sprite can she was using for a reference. She told me i could spray paint it green if i want. Lol. I declined job offer and she wasnt very happy about it. Lol.

I had someone ask me to build a thin cue. Then he wanted me to make it thinner. Then he had someone build up the wrap with tape and wrap over that to make it thicker. Next he wanted me to take that off and rewrap it. Then he wanted it thinner even more. Then he wanted me to try and make it thicker. That was when I told him I never wanted to see that cue again, so he sold it and I no longer do cue work for him.

I know of a guy who approached a famous cuemaker and inquired about having a cue made. While talking with him at the maker's shop, the guy proceeded to pull a pre-made 8-point veneered blank out of his coat pocket and handed it to the maker, asking if he would make him a cue out of it. The ironic thing was, at the time, this maker was world-reknown for his point work. Well, the maker looked at him for a moment with a somewhat puzzled stare, scratched his head and pondered for a few seconds. He then replied that yes, he would agree to make him a cue......but he would have to charge him repair rates, he wouldn't engrave his initials onto the cue, and under no circumstance could he ever tell anyone that he made it for him. Lol....the cue ended up not being made. :)

I had a player ask me to build a cue with a shaft on both ends. He played APA and was trying to beat the jump cue rule. So, he wanted to be able to play with one end of the cue, then flip it around and hit jump shots with the other end.

I politely declined and told him he was over thinking things.

The thing is, I know that player. He could not execute a jumpshot with a standard jump cue if he had to.

I had another player from the same league bring me a dowel that came as a filler in a cue case that he bought and asked me if I could turn it into a shaft for him. I said no to that one too.
 
Square cue is unique to say the least. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen a pic of it. Actually quite nice from an aesthetic point of view.

Dumb question but I would suppose he does use it.

Could sell it on EBay like the walking cane cues.

Every year at Indiana State VNEA I see a pool cue that is yellow, hexagonal, with a weird pink "eraser" bumper on the end....yes, it is made to look like a giant pencil....and the guy shoots with it....I swear, some people....lol

That was made by Mike Neal here in Nebraska. He made it as a novelty but, as you said, some people...
 
Over the years I've had several very odd requests but the one that stands out the most was one from an inmate in prison that wanted a steel rod through the cue so he could hit someone without breaking it. That letter used to be framed around here...
