collar or no collar

I once broke a sneaky pete (no collars) with a 3/8x10 pin, on a break shot. I guess I bent it a little bit and the wood split on the shaft side. The butt was fine. I now know that having a collar on the shaft helps protect it from splitting like that, but is one necessary on the butt or are butts just as likely to split? I heard Bob Frey will not put a guarentee on one of his cues unless there is a collar on the shaft, but one is not required on the butt. Just makes me wonder.

Thanks very much,
Ian

I've made a lot with a collar, on the shaft only. I don't know of any problems. I have had shafts split, when no collars are present...JER

I like my sneakies with no collars, but there is a certain amount of risk. After all, collars were developed for a reason...

I believe! If the joint pin is properly installed and the forearm has no defects the butt probably won't crack. Note i used the word "probably".

Butts in my opinion are less likly to split I have built shafts without but I let the customer know there is a risk. To date knock on wood no issues however there could be a problem in down the road. I am a firm believer in collars they just make a sounder cue in my opinion.

I think it depends on the pin. If you have a 5-16/18 with a brass insert in the shaft, I don't think you'll need a collar. But with a big pin into wood, I would'nt go without one.

If you have a collar on the shaft why not put one on the butt?
IMHO a butt without a collar looks naked and unfinished. If only the shaft has a collar I would think the shaft is not original because who would build a cue like that?

Food for thought....

Shaft bored and tapped no epoxy.
Butt bored tapped and pin epoxied in place.
The weaker side will always break first. IE shaft side.
With a collar on the shaft the butt becomes the weak point.
With a collar on both who knows where the weak point is... who care I will never break it..
All imho....

For 3/8-10 pin, a partial phenolic insert epoxied in the shaft, about 1/2" in length solves the problem nicely, IMO. The shaft is reinforced at the joint and you can have the no collar look.
