Collectors

The gems that I had at one time or another

Comic Original Art: Painted Cover to Miracleman #1. Bought it for $3k. I sold this to a collector in Ireland for a little over $10k. It was mixed media of watercolors, acrylic, india ink. One of the most beautiful comic book covers ever.

Watch: Panerai 1950. Bought it for about $6k, sold it for $8k. God I miss that watch. 47mm monstrosity!

I too enjoy a good cigar every so often. I have three humidors. One for my Cubans, one for my Dominicans and the other belongs to my brother. I enjoy Fuente 858 Flora Finas and Opus X. I love Fuente Anejos. The Cubans I get from my older brothers who travel abroad all the time. My favorites are Monte Cristo #2's and #4's.

I also dabbled in guns a bit. Never as a hobby, more of an appreciation for precision machinery and the responsibility that went with it. When I was in college, I interned with the Erie County Sheriff's Dept in Buffalo, NY. That's when I went and got my licenses. I have a Sig Sauer P228 and P239 and a junky Republic Arms .45. I use to have a Colt AR-15 Carbine, that had to go when I moved back to NYC. For home protection and shits & giggles, I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge.

65 Mustang - Selby Cobra 350 --- White with big blue racing stripe down the middle - no back seat - payment and insurance took ALL the pay check - gas money was courtesy of my pool buds. I was the flashiest pool player in Phx - road players thought I had $$ to blow 'cause of the car!! Sold it - but if I could have kept it - it would now be valued in excess of $100,00!!!

Addictions include but are not limited to guns(about 50 or so), Watches,Custom Knives, and most recently cues.

I think that what draws all of us into collecting these items is the appreciation of the time and skill it takes the artist(maker) to produce them.

It could be the polyaginal rifleing on an hk p9s pistol, the super slick action an a colt python or a dakota safari rifle, the shape and balance of a Dusty Moulton Knife, Or the fine point and inlay work on one of your custom cues it is about attention to detail and pride. I think that we all then get pride of ownership.

So you can never go wrong if it makes you happy and gives you somthing to show and talkabout with your friends.

My brother in law told me the bad news about the $100,000 several years ago - so I figured it would just go up and up --- sort of makes you sick. I sold another classic car to finance some of this cuemaking obsession (kids told me I sold the "family dog" and my daughter cried --- hope it turns out better then the mustang)

i collected all the normal teenage stuff, but as for adult excesses,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,only my cues.

were i were rich, i'd be collecting japanese collectables, and maybe some european art nouveau

Damn!

Hell, I thought I was doing something collecting comic books! LOL!:p  "Oh, I used to have 10 Rolexes, but I got rid of 4 of them." What do you guys do for a living?!?! The only other thing that I have a collection of is video games. I have a bunch of Street Fighter games and various other games for the Sega Dreamcast. Still, its not the same as original comic art though.:D :p

Glad Im not the only one

Over the years Ive been in and out of collecting but now I have a modest anime and manga collection. I typically prefer samurai stories but have some random stuff as well. Cues: have always had 3-5 cues at one time but never really considered it a collection. I know Im a dork!

I would like to say that material things are fun to have, but they are not completely satisfying to the soul.

Nothing you can buy or own is as fulfilling as having a family you adore and who loves you equally. Being a father is the greatest experience in a man's life.

Too Poor

I have a 11 year old truck, 2 shotguns (a new wing master and model 97 16 gauge that has shot 2 people in its miserable 100 year existence) A mismatched, mostly straight Mcdermott. I guess I'm a bare bones type, not by choice though LOL. My wife has been collecting college credits for 15 years and do 3 kids count as a collection? Heck 2 of them are a matched set.:) Hopefully this is the valley and we'll be on the up swing pretty soon.

Jimbo,

The Mick is my all time fav. I think you and I have a few things in common....hear you're a Yanks fan.

My pack-ratting and collecting started with sports cards, mainly baseball. At one point in time my dad and I had complete sets back to '53...and yes, even had a '51 bowman Mantle. This was '80-'85 when we were into it the heaviest. We got into collecting baseball cards in the late '70s when we went to a card show with basically a suitcase of old cards that he had from when he was a boy. Some of the collectors were pretty taken aback....he had a lot of '54 topps cards and about a dozen Hank Aaron rookies. We made some trades and things took off from there.

I also have somewhat of a collection of vintage coins and was pretty hot and heavy into die cast metal toys from the '40s and '50s (Smith Miller, Doepke, etc.) As for my vices, pool cues and golf have been the only ones I have manged to keep going throughout the years.

Tate....you are so dead-on, especially about being a father. Sean

Collected comic books briefly... then moved onto the collectable card game scene withe MTG (magic the gathering, no kiddie pokemon or yu-gioh junk though...).

this is totally off topic, so excuse me jimbo while i temporarily hijack this thread. it probably won't last any.

to the baseball card collectors,,,who were your favorite player cards, besides the obvious mantles and mays,,,what were some of your more obtuse players.

i grew up a yankee fan, but here's my list of "other" players,,,

1..warren spahn
2..ernie banks
3..andy pafko
4..hank bauer. more than the other yankees

why, i don't know,,,why andy pafko, i REALLY don't know. i never followed these guys. i think maybe i like andy pafko's name or something.

I collected steins. It got to the point that that was all my kids
would get me for presents. Then I realized that all you can do
with them is dust them. Now I collect cues. Much more expensive
hobby but at least I can play with them.

When I was a kid several in the neighborhood had a '57
Mantle ( what happened to it?). Everybody was searching
for Tony Kubek.

I started reading comics about the time FF#1 was just introduced. I became an instant Marvel fan and was there for them all, Iron Man, Spidey, thor, X-Men. I probably had 90% of the first marvels.

I used to skip lunch at elementary school and scrounge returnable bottles to get enough money to meet the truck in front as it pulled up to the liquor/deli every Thursday afternoon. I would sit and wait until the comics would be unloaded, then the driver would let me open the bundles. I was known for my boxes and boxes of comics. On weekends I would scrap construction jobs for precious metals and bottles, mainly the thick copper wire scraps.

In my teenage years, I was embarassed that I had read comics, so I sold them all - cheap.

In my mid 20's, I realized what a screw up that was, so I scoured swap meets and bought collections for cheap.

At a family function, my father-in-law at the time ridiculed me for collecting comics. I told him that reading comics makes you super strong. He laughed again at me. I said "if you don't believe me, let's arm wrestle". I flipped his entire body over in front of his everyone. He was PISSED and I was very pleased to shut him up. Later I divored his daughter so he became someone else's problem anyway.

So, I realized the error of my ways. When I sell something now, I make damn sure I really don't want it anymore.
