Colored plastic rings?

Coos Cues
Does anyone know where can I get colored plastic rings like the ones atlas sells including A joint size (5/8x1.125?) They have fiber rings in black in three sizes but not white which also seems odd.

Or where can I get suitable plastic sheets to cut my own. I would just get them from Atlas but all they have is butt and joint sizes. I would like them all to match up and down the cue.

Thanks,

JC

Buy a white plastic sheet from them a make your own ring.

The .030 sheets are the exact same material.

Just put it between two pieces of wood a drill your .625 hole then cut the OD oversize by hand.

Maybe try color Veneer sheets to make color rings? Just my thoughts. At least better choices on colors.

What about other colors besides white? And what exactly is the material?

How about this vinyl materiel? It comes in just about any thickness you could want.

Edit: I see the thickness is limited as they are color coded. So you would have to use the thickness for the color you wanted. For instance .020 is yellow and .030 is coral. I didn't understand this at first.

I have not tried that but my reading indicates you are likely to have color issues around the circumference due to half being end grain. Seems a lot of folks are negative about that aspect.

Thanks guys,

JC,

They have all the colors. I talked John and Eric into getting the sheets to match the colored rings 3 years ago so billets match rings and stitches perfectly. Before that Atlas did not carry the sheets and I used to get the white sheets from a guitar place and it did not match perfectly.

If you glue the sheets together for a stack make sure you scratch the plastic with 100 grit. That is a must.

I use 3M spray adhesive for gluing the stacks before the press, super glue or epoxy does not work so well for the plastic sheets that have to be cut on the bandsaw later. They want to come apart ! You will see if you try epoxy or CA. 3M spray works great.

Here are white and black plastic rings after final taper pass and sheets for the stitch stack on the billet {black - white - black}. The transition in the box veneer illusion is seamless because the material is the same.

Here is a cue from 3 years ago before final taper pass and the white material from the guitar website is just a shade off and it does not look seamless. You can see really see the difference and under the clear it gets worse. The plastic sheets rock! I showed this to John and Eric at Atlas and they got right on it and stocked the material. Atlas rocks because they listen to the cue makers big time.

The white looked like it matched but when assembled you can see the difference big time. This one is white - black - white.

Just imagine if SW used plastic rings instead of veneers.
Do you think they would have as much prestige?
Do you really want plastic where the forearm meets the handle when you force them together?
Any ring pack there should be bordered with phenolic. Make a jig to glue the ring pack then lap it before gluing the handle.

Plastic or fiber rings are more dense than veneer and with the veneer rings there is a grain difference that is not as visually consistent as you view the ring as you rotate the cue.

People who use fiber and plastic rings are looking for color consistency and are not interested in your negative innuendos. Some people choose not to build the same cue over and over again also. Boring some would say!

Prestige is very subjective and everyone does not share your specific view. Some would say prestige while some would say marketing hype. If you buy into the hype, more power to you. Value is also a subjective matter. Your perception is is not a reality to many other people. To think your view is the only one that is correct is fool hardy. There are many paths one can travel.

All rings should be laped on a granite surface plate.

Phenolic is a form of plastic BTW.

Phenolic (Bakelite) --

History - The first truly synthetic plastic was invented by Leo Baekeland - a Belgium chemist living in New York.

Just saying!

All rings should be laped on a granite surface plate no matter what they are made of.

Plastic does not absorb epoxy.
When veneers and fiber absorb epoxy, they are hard as a rock.
Prestige is subjective, that's why I ask the question.
And imo , SW would not be a prestigious if they used plastic sheets and rings instead of veneers . That would be like Meucci and Viking.

Not all rings need to be lapped. You can't lap .015" wood trims. You must have not tried.
You can also keep the bottom phenolic of a ring pack a little thicker then face it off after gluing to the bottom of the forearm.

With the right scratch and the proper glue (contact cement) the plastic rings have great adhesion and the finish top coats do not shrink in those areas at all. That is the true test. Juma does not soak either and it takes epoxy gluing and clear finish awesome without downstream clear coat pinching either. If you disagree, I can't help you.

I am sure Bob Meucci and Mr. Hart are not fans of you if they read your post. You have prestige, they don't, Right? Not!!!!

If I make box style billets out of veneer rings it looks like crap. If I do them with the matching plastic sheets and rings the box illusion geometry is obtained and is seamless. IMO. So when I say to my self, self do you want a seamless look or do you want uneven contrasts that cross contaminates very easy, well you know my answer. If you wish to be influenced by SW or who ever, go for it. I really don't care for that look myself.

How boring life as a cue maker would be if we all tried to copy SW. It would be drudgery for me to keep doing the same old same old every day. I would not be motivated to enter my shop. Some people don't build cues because of monetary remuneration.

Many notable CMs use Delrin butt caps and that don't glue and relay on mechanics not glue. So what! Tell Barry he should make his cues like SW and not like Gus's classic construction style so he can gain some prestige! Not!!!!...... LOL.

There are six million stories in The Naked City, this has been one of them. LOL

Huh?
I use Delrin butt plates too . I thread them 7/8 18 TPI and create anti-spinning slots. Hell, Spain used delrin collars as an experiment.

If Titlist came with green and purple plastic sheets instead of veneer, it'd look funky. You think it'd have the same prestige ?
Why use veneers at all then? Plastic is easier to work with.

I said plastic does not absorb epoxy.

JC can make up his own mind. All I did was ask him something to ponder it.
Hell, I have a lot of white fibers. I'll sell them cheap.

For colored rings to match the veneers, just slice off soft maple rings of the right thickness, dye them, dry and press them and you're ready to go.
