Well, it was the birthday of a great friend of mine. I didn't know what to get him. Hell, he's got everything. So, I called in a favor. The Train! Now, for those of you that don't remember Mike Coltrain, he was on the Mosconi Cup team at around 20 years old. You can take Johnny and put Mike's head on it, subtract the eight ball, and there you have it. Anyway, me and Mike go waaaayyyy back. Way back.

Anyway, Mike didn't hesitate and agreed to come to Randy's party at Sharkeys and give him a personal lesson and kind of an exhibition. What a gift if I do say so myself.

Sure enough, people pulled up chairs and the Train took over an hour, maybe even two with Randy. Pretty cool of the Train. Man, watching this reminded me of our little road trips. He was wearing beads and flipflops back then. Lot of f un. Lot of fun.

Anyway, if you pull up Randy Wilson's 60th on youtube, you'll see a great time was had by all. Thanks Mike.

You nice guy you. That's an awesome gift. My B-Day is Jan. 5th...please feel free to send in something exotic.

Good to read that Coltrain is still making the pool rounds. I haven't seen him in several years. One thing I do know about Michael Coltrain is that whatever he's betting on, I'm betting the same. He is one fine pool handicapper.

One of the very first pool tournaments I encountered an extended race at the end for a double-elimination format was when Coltrain won the tournament from the losers bracket. I just did not understand how everybody else in the tournament could lose a round and still stay in it, but the guy in the winners bracket never gets to lose a round. It wouldn't have really mattered too much to me, except that my horse was Coltrain's opponent in the extended race in the finals. LOL!

Coltrain won!

I wish I could find the pictures from that tournament, but I didn't have a digital camera then. :frown:

Here's a great shot of Michael Coltrain and Alex Pagulayan.

The photos are always great!

JAM always brings the good stuff to a thread...much appreciated for sure.

When JAM comes to the main forum just sporting her everyday stuff it makes you glad that you're a member of AZ Billiards.

Thanks Jenny!

JoeyA (wonders what JAM does with the snookered photos, you know, the ones with the person's eyes closed, etc). She has to take multiple photos of the same people and only shows us the best ones).

BRASS TAPS!!! I use to live in Chapel Hill and go to Brass Taps every now and again to play on Tuesday nights. I never saw Mike but i saw Johnny when he wasnt touring.

Ill never forget the first time i went and played next to Archer with his gorgeous Schon cue with diamonds inlayed in it (god knows how much its worth!!!).

Funny but one of the best table length draw shots ive ever hit was there at Taps. After Johnny was done with his match he sat right in front of my table. I was so nervous because i knew he was watching me (first time in any pool hall people are watching you) and then this shot comes up. I said to myself..."Stay down, follow through and TRUST it!!" As im eyeing the shot i look up adn i see Johnny sitting there with his hand on his chin watching me......Then i hit that straight in 8 foot shot like a hanger and drew the rock all the way back down table and deposited the hill-hill 9-ball to move on!!

That is one of my VERY fond pool memories  Ill never forget it

Aw, shucks, thanks for the kind words, Joey! Much appreciated. :)

Here's a funny one. We were at the Glass City Open in Buckeye Country, and I was snapping pictures left and right. The place was rocking and rolling, and I was having so much fun. :grin-square:

I asked these three players if they'd pose with my boyfriend for a picture. He was so sick and tired of posing for pictures for me that day because I was taking so many, asking people to pose.

Well, I went to try to take this picture below, and my batteries were dying in the camera. I continued to click the camera, but it wouldn't take. I kept saying: Say "Cheese." Wait a minute. Say "Cheese." Wait a minute. Say "Cheese."

Finally, Keith said, "I'd like to make some damn cheese. Hurry up and take the picture." Everybody cracked up, except him, and that's when the picture took, right at that moment. :o

The smiling faces are Mark Jarvis on the left and Troy Frank and Corey Deuel on the right.

I remember the yearly junior tourney at the Cue Corner here in PA. I was working, and a crew of youg dudes came in from the Carolinas.....flush with $$$ and ready to play anyone!!!

I'm trying to remember all of them.....I think it was Mike Coletrain, Chan Witt?, Corey was there, and a few others. They gambled fearlessly, and played real well!!!

Gerry - Was that at Pete Sinklers? He used to add a couple thousand and all the juniors would come in for a tournament during the summer. I was there in the early 90's... Chan had already passed away...here is how we finished the year I was there: 1. Tony Watson 2. Jerry Slivka 3. Mike Rinella 4. Corey Duel (was like 12 years old) 5. Mike Coltrain 6. Josh Heaston 7.Charlie Williams 8. Chuck Altomare? Some good players and some good times.

No Doubt Coltrain was a real threat at the table.... Always very professional and had a good head on his shoulders for matching up... The ever popular matchup between him and watson was always my favorite head to head...
Not sure how they ever finished as a total wins to loses but it was always something to see between the youngest guys in the room betting the HIGH stakes....
Hope Mike is doing well and tell him kenny wilson said hello if you would...

What is Mike doing these days? Does he play pool at all anymore? He had a ton of talent.

Yup....I worked for Pete for a few years. I was behind the counter the year you are talking about. Now I remember all those guys! Corey was crazy good for his age. Do you remember Petes son Petey?......he quit playing, but could have been one of the greats.....good times,

Mike doesn't play much now, due to a nerve condition. He owns a Smoothie King franchise and is doing quite well. Still a nice dude, and even with the nerve thing you might not wanna give him a try.

Oh, man, my boyfriend loves Smoothie King. In fact, his favorite is the Banana Boat.
