Comet Billiards Closing

Is comet going to be able to host the Joss Tour on their Last day? According to AZ, theres a Joss Tour Stop there on Oct 31 - Nov 1.

i was gonna go to the joss there. but i'm sure it will be cancelled or moved to somewhere else. it won't be at comet ! i wonder if zuglan knows yet.

That sucks. I went there once when in the area on business. It was a great place to play

NYCGRIND.COM has several photo galleries of Predator events at Comet.

JT also has a nice video recap of the Predator Tour Stop #15 here..

Guy, what's up brother? i found out bout a week ago, some sad news. Some of us don't no what you lost, until you lose it........

See you on the tourny trail real sooooon..Frankie

Christian, just to confirm, the last day is Sat, Oct 31st? And if so, can we arrange some sort of impromptu party/ send off for the Haleys?

Eric

Eric,

Could someone get in there to take lots and lots of pictures of everything before things get taken down? A digital camera, you can shoot hundreds of pics and not cost a dime.

I'm sure there are many of us that have never got to visit the place and would like to see what others have experienced, as well as the people that visited there, would like some memories forever preserved.

I would be happy to create a nice slideshow and host it on the web, as well as send you copies of it, if you wish.

If so, get ahold of me and we'll work out some details. Find someone with a nice digitial camera and take a ton of photos in high resolution. We can't let another pool room vanish, without some good photos, as to let people be taken back to their memories.

Thanks !!

Hey Christian,

From what I understand the last day of operation will be Sat. Oct. 31st, very sad news indeed -- we've all heard the rumblings about Comet closings for quite some time now, but, I guess - I for one never really wanted to believe that such a nice room with such personable staff would ever have to close down, just another horrible sign of the times we're living in.
Although, Comet wasn't what I would consider my home room per se, I have played there many times and quite alot recently and always enjoyed the atmosphere of that room -- IT SURELY WILL BE MISSED BY MANY!
Best Wishes to Marcia & Bill Haley for all they've done for the players over the years.

From what Bill told me last night he has to be OUT by the 31st.. I think this Saturday is it...

Red, unfortunately, I'm headed down to Chesapeake VA for the next few days.

There are lots of pics online. You can go to accu-stats.com, click on the Ustream link to view the Accu Stats arena and some recorded matches.

Aslo, NYC Grind.com has lots of pics from regional tour stops at Comet.

There are lots of pics online, scattered everywhere. IF you want a particular shot or angle, let me know and I'll try to get in there before it's closed for good (altho, the Accu Stats arena is already down).

Just an unbelievably sad day in the game. I have so many amazing memories of playing and watching matches in that room.

I met Jack Colavita in that room. I met Pat Fleming there too. Bill Haley, the owner of Comet Billiards, introduced me to both of them. Met Dan Louie and several AZ legends there as well.

The staff was always so helpful, and they were always smiling. I suspect that was because Bill and Marcia produced such a nice environment for everyone.

Comet played host to every conceivable tournament in the area. When a home was needed for the New Jersey State 14.1 championships, the Haleys offered Mr. Colavita a place to hold it. When a room could not be found for the World 14.1, the Haleys stepped up. Joss events, Tri-States, Predator tours, Blaze tours, north jersey 14.1 tours... what did these wonderful people not do for the game?

They deserve better, because they gave us so much. I will never forget this room, or the people who made it special. My condolences to all who considered it their home room; when great rooms close, it really does tear away a little piece of you. I'm missing a few pieces myself; it's a terrible feeling.

I wish I could stop by this weekend to see the room one last time and to say my goodbyes. I have an out-of-town wedding unfortunately. I'll say a little prayer on Saturday night.

Best of luck to Bill, Marcia, and all the staff. We'll miss you, and all you did.

Thanks,
Steve

here's a pic of danny barouty, jack colavita, and bill haley after the 2004 nj straight pool tournament -

This is incredibly sad news. Hats off to Bill and Marcia for all they have done for the game, incredible effort year after year and will surely be missed.

My Hat Tipped

My hat is tipped to Bill Haley. I recently met Bill and have great appreciation for what he's done for pool as a room owner. We recently discussed the billiards industry and where it was headed. I wanted to partner up with him on a Pool Room only tour in the tri-state area - no kiddie club hang outs that just happened to have pool tables. We share the same love for the game and I am destined to bring pool back into a more positive light in the world as a true sport that was first created for royalty and the elite. I hope to be able to carry on in the same fashion Bill did at Comet Billiards in my future endeavors in Sandcastle Billiards. Thank you Bill! You've got my number if you care to contact me for anything.
Comet's Tee-Shirt will be immortalized and mounted in Sandcastle Billiards!!! I'm sorry to lose what I considered a sister pool room - as far as real players' rooms went.

Sincerely,
Sandman of Sandcastle Billiards

your exactly right, and your list adds up to pool just being a side show in a business, kinda like a pinball machine or 2 over in the corner.

I guarantee you if the rent was 50%-60% less for Comet they would stay open, but the property owners cant pay the banks the loans if they drop the rents-so the pool rooms are history. When it all shakes out in a few years rents will be lower and pool rooms a more viable business.

.

I spoke to a VERY big guy in pool and we talked about Comet, and it is a rent issue-nothing more or nothing less. I cant go into the detail. So its not a dieing pool biz, its a landlord deal. So i'm glad I was rite about the rent issue. perhaps there is hope.

That is surprising because it is a very strange location. Hardly a set-up in high demand. It has absolutely no visibilty. There is one front door the size of a single door on a house. Not one window. It is not suited for much other than a warehouse which generally doesn't command big rent. I cant imagine it being rented out any time soon.

Landlords are a strange bunch though. I know one guy who got kicked out of his space bec he couldnt pay More than double the rent after being a rock there for 7 years. After he left, the place was empty for FOUR years.

No matter what the reason, it still comes down to the business (Comet) cant pay the rent from the present cash flow.

Thanks to the wonderful tax codes we have, not only are manufacturers rewarded for moving jobs out of the country but commercial landlords can write off available floor space for years. It actually pays for them to leave some space open. That's the story here in New York anyway.

Bill, if you're following this thread, thanks for the great events. You are a class act. Hope you re-open soon. If not, are you going to auction off memorabilia? Please let AZ'ers know. Good luck and good health.

Perhaps fatboy or some other business saavy guy can chip in but as far as i kniow, there is no instance where "writing something off" is better than making a single dollar from it but im willing to learn.

On a similar note, there was a pool hall here in Edgewater, NJ called "21". It was PACKED every weekend, had great cash flow, but was forced to leave. Landlord wanted a "clean" image and decided to double the rent, indirectly forcing 21 out. This happened in 2007, and the place is still empty.

I'm not saying this is what is happening over at comet but I still get angry when I think about this. It was my go-to hangout spot when I was young, and now it's just been an empty space for 3+ years.

Just an FYI also, some of you may be aware, some maybe not. Walmart will not sign a space contract in a stripmall or within a certain distance from a pool room. This has close several rooms also around the U.S. Mike Zuglan's room was impacted by this insidious strong arm and bullying mentality by the bohemoth store. I will go out of my way to not shop there since finding out. BOYCOTT WALMART...they are seriously anti-pool.
