Commentary on Guinness World Series

Hi! Bob Guerrero here. :)

Don't worry, I appreciate all your comments. I know I'm not the greatest. I am just a geek who loves the game as much as ya'll do.

I actually prefer being an anchor for Pool and having someone more knowledgeable be an analyst. But ESPN and the other networks also have trouble getting knowledgeable people, especially those who speak well.

If you guys have any suggestions for me to do my job better I'd most appreciate it.

Have a nice day and keep on shootin! :)

Bob -

I for one appreciate your comment here and willingness to ask for help and support.

My biggest complaint about the ESPN pool commentary in Asia is with Chuck, not you. I just cannot listen to his drivel, so now I usually watch the Chinese language feed or mute the sound. I do not speak Chinese.

Your suggestion about you being the anchor with expert analysts has some merit, I think. I am sure there are native English speakers in Asia with relevant pool knowledge who could add a lot in the analyst role. I know of one Australian who lived in Shanghai in the past who would be good.

Take care and keep up the struggles.

I've worked with Bob on a couple of tournaments over there. He is a good guy to have in the booth with you. He knows when to talk and when to let you explain something. He has no chance working with Shriner. You need two people that know something about the game to have a meaningful dialogue.

I will be doing commentary on the World Cup of Pool in September. I sure hope you guys get to see it over here. It sometimes makes me sick when I work on a good tournament (like last years World Ten Ball) and it's never shown in the states. Same thing for the Mosconi Cup. Last year was the greatest! I don't know if it ever aired in any form in the states as yet.

When we do these shows live over there, it goes to millions of homes across Asia and Europe and they see full length matches. They even replay them again that same night. Kind of like the Golf Channel does over here with their tournaments. Like I've said before, pool gets good ratings on TV over there. Of course, seeing matches "live" helps a lot. And with no editing either. Oh well, I'm just a hired hand doing the best job I can. Just like my buddy Bob.

my 2 cents

Right now there is no better live tv pool broadcast than what ESPNStar and Guinness puts out anywhere in the world. They make pool look like a serious legitimate sport.

Chuck definitely does not belong commenting on anything related to pool. I'd much rather have Bob G. go along talking to himself than listening to Chucks "fill comments" he has no insight into pool what so ever.

I've been watching the Asian Tour, World Championships since 2000, and all of these recent Guinness events, on TV and live in person in the Philippines. The way they set up the Tv table with the camera angles lights and the way the cameramen know how to frame a player when he is down on the shot, they know where he is shooting to. It's all far better than anything I've seen on ESPN USA, and anything on Accustats which I have tons of videos and DVDs. Being at the live event I think I've see at least 8 to 10 cameras just for the TV table alone. And they don't feel the need to place any gimmicky "in the pocket" cameras for complete coverage.

That being said the commentary does not come to par with say Billy Incardona or Grady Mathews dissecting every single nuance of what's gong on. But as a complete package there is no better Live Pool product on tv right now.

just my opinion.

Good commentary adds so much to a pool match... it should never be overlooked.
I, sometimes, even choose what match to watch depending solely on who is doing the commentary.

My vote goes for Incardona, Diliberto, Mathews, Helfert...
Wych has improved tremendously through the years though.
I don't dislike Bob Guerrero, I have not heard Chuck Shriner (I am a lucky guy I guess :grin-square:)

You have a nice day too, Bob.

I think others have been harsh on you here. The standard network model of one announcer (dumb) and one analyst (start) is just wrong, IMO. Others are right that the announcer you've been paired with makes a good broadcast just about impossible, but I do appreciate your comments. If you wanted to get slightly more technical / advanced, I'd prefer it and I think it would make things more interesting. However, you can't answer a good question if it isn't asked.

I was fortunate to only watch one match on TV, got down for the quarter finals through to the end. I don't think my knowledge is deep enough for analyst role, and I'm not loquacious enough for the announcer role, but I could probably suggest a couple of Jakarta-based native English speakers who might be appropriate. If you want my help, email me at this id @gmail.com. I don't hang enough here to get a PM.

Bob it is awesome to see you post here! I have NEVER had an issue with your commentating. My responses in these threads have been completely directed at Chuck. Please do not take them otherwise. Keep up the great work!!

I would rather listen to Jim and Chuck for 12 hours straight than listen to Danny Diliberto for twenty minutes.....

Man, I just surprised how everyone is judging Bob Guerrero. He is not doing good but he is doing GREAT! I am not biased here but tell me another commentator who is more enthusiastic, knowledgeable and funny in doing pool commentary than him. Maybe Sid wadell in terms of enthusiasm, Jim Wych in the in and outs of billiards, Hopkins in billiard tips and even Eva Laurance for her love of the game. Bob explains it the way an amateur player can understand and relate.

I remember the world pool championship when Alcano won. Jinno Rufino and another commentator were getting manhandled by televiewers for their inept comments and analysis. I like Jinno Rufino for his Hardball show because he is clearly a sports guy and is great at analyzing athletes but pool is definitely not one of the things that he knows. Bob would definitely be great in that show with his knowledge in football, tennis and golf.

Another example is Laurance(the bald guy). I can see he is a good man by the way he talks and smiles but in terms of commentating, he is just following or confirming what his co-commentator is saying.

I actually miss Sid Wadell because you don't get to hear the famous voice. I also wish that Jay Helfert comment more but I think he is great at organizing tournaments especially the Karen Corr case in the 2009 women world ten ball.

Wow this is getting long and this is just my first post. I registered because I want to defend Bob. We don't know each other. I actually wanted to ask him a pool question in one of the qualifiers at Star Billiards but he looks unapproachable and was frowning at that time(lol!). I am just defending him as a commentator because I am learning a lot from pool just by listening to what he says. The way he admires great players. I remember how ecstatic he commented when Efren made that 3 rail shot in one of the Asian 9 ball tours, the combo shot of Alcano against Souquet and so on and so forth. I sometimes wonder what would happen if I played him and see how he plays. I am pretty sure he is a good player maybe not an Efren-uesque kind of player but at least Chuck Shriner,Laurance or Rufino won't stand a chance against him. We need commentators like Bob that explains the scientific, mental and physical aspect of pool. For me, he should not be compared to the below average level of Chuck Shriner. Bob is clearly what this sport needs.

Danny does tend to 'go on" a little with his stories, but at least he has a lot of pool knowledge and doesn't say too many really ingnorant things as Chuck does.

Jim really is OK with me too.

oh yeah. i even forgot to mention Edgar Acaba. He is a pro player but I sometimes don't understand what he is saying. Jennifer Lee is great by the way commenting. I hope she does it more.

I've shot pool with Bob on several occasions. He loves to play! I would call him a good amateur player, which is fine with me. I like getting a second shot on some racks!

hi jay (nice name!),

Your book pool wars seems interesting. I think Ted Lerner (don't know if you know him, a commentator also) also has a book about pool in the Philippines. It would be great if both of you collaborated and make a Philippine version of the Pool Wars. Hope to see you in more tournaments.

Ted and I are good buds. His book "Hey Joe" is a little different than Pool Wars. It is more of a travel loge to the Philippines for the uninitiated. We will be doing commentary together on the upcoming World Cup next month.

I personally love watching pool matches when Grady and Billy incardona are commentating the match, with Buddy hall speaking with them, its the best game ever , i enjoy listetning to these guys while watching a pool game and eating my nachoos! xD

Funny!
I remember Alex playing with Rodolfo Luat against another pair
last year at SM City. The audience, including his teammate, Luat,
were all smiles with his antics! And I kid you not!

I can just hear Alex now. "WTF was he thinking there? He must be mad at his money. I'd rob his a$$ if he played like that." Johnnyt

About Bob G.

I personally know Bob G. A very approachable guy - fun to be with.
With regard to his commentary - it's more than ok with me.
It's better than good. And i like the way he put himself in this thread
- asking for advise and all, thanking everyone in advance for such.

Hey Bob! Hope to see more of you in the coming tours in the Philippines!
The best of luck, my friend!
