Over the years there has been some real doozies but my memory doesn't allow me to remember them well. By the way, does anyone know the origin of "doozie", as in, that's a real doozie"?

It is a reference to the over-the-top and very extravagent automobile, the Deusenburg (sp). Now, where were we? Oh yeah, commentary.

Just the other day, while listening to the Big Truck stream, I heard a few funny ones from a guest commentator sitting in with Ray. If I'm not mistaken, his name was "Smitty" and he won the 1P tourney there at Levittown.

It was either Mike Deschaine's or Ginky's break that he was referring to, in his heavily New York accented voice, when he said, "If he keeps breaking like that then he'll dictate like Castro". lol!

Another of his 'gems' was in referring to an upcoming shot that needed some cue ball spin to get shape, he said; "he's gonna twirl the pearl". Funny. I'm not sure how many matches I could stay with him for since these kinds of references were coming fairly non-stop, nevertheless, it was worth listening to get the two above...

I also believe it was him again later that when a match went hill-hill, he referred to it as going "double cheeseburgers".

So, what do you all remember as some noteworthy (funny, strange, whatever) comments made during pool matches?

Best,
Brian kc

Double Cheeseburger is pretty common in the NY Metro area.

I was actually in the room in the mid 90's when "2 guys goin for the Cheese" morphed into 'Double Cheeseburger'. Johnny B then spread it far and wide. As usual with these things, it may have been coined elsewhere as well.

I haven't heard this one in any commentary, but when I'm going to put a lot of spin on the rock I have been known to say " I'm going to put a lot of crud on the spud". Hasn't caught on though.

Bears & Packers!

Two weeks ago when the Bears were playing Green Bay, Jay Cutler made one of his infamous passes to nowhere land. One of the commentators said, " Maybe he was throwing that one to someone in Hinsdale" (Hinsdale is a suburb of Chicago btw). I was laughing when my sweet wife asks, "who's Hinsdale?" She thought Hinsdale was a football player! After I calmed down I explained to her that Hinsdale is a suburb of Chicago. It ain't pool related but was really funny at the moment!!

Kickin, funny you should start this as I heard those lines from him and was laughing. He had some good stuff, wish I could remember his others.

Billy Inc - Boy, that match on the other table over there is really taking a long time.

Grady - Well, perhaps the match is rife with safety play. Just like your head is rife with nonsense.

___

Grady - Well at least I didn't forget to send in my entrance fee like you did.

Billy Inc - Well I am in the same position you are, and you sent yours in.

Sid Wadell, without a doubt, the biggest standout of billiard commentators, bar none! Imagine a turbo-charged Howard Cosell with a British accent. :D

Last night I'm playing and over cut a few balls. A fellow player, a Cree elder, was watching and says to me "sometimes your knife can be too sharp".

Joey, I love the enthusiasm from the British commentators during the Mosconi Cup.. Others may not agree but I really get a kick out of their energy and phrases.

I too, enjoy the European commentators a great deal, especially Alex Lely who can also swing a cue. He's not the over-the-top kind of guy that Sid is but I would definitely enjoy sitting in the booth with a guy like Alex.
I might have to get an interpreter if I sit in with Sid. LOL
