Compared to executive west days?

I haven't gone for years, but I'm thinking about going next year and have a few questions. How does DCC at the casino stack up to the executive west days? Are there still as many mini's and is it still tough to find a table?

Can't compare

The tournament at the Horseshoe casino is nothing at all like the ones that were at the Executive West. If you go do not try to compare, it is like night and day. Just go and have a good time and start a new set of memories.I was addicted to going to the E. West and would not miss it, hell it was fun just walking from your room to the Tournament room there was so much going on. It is not like that at all at the casino.There will never be another run like the one at the Executive west.

Never Say Never

Believe me, with all the bright minds in pool, we will find another Executive-West Type atmosphere one day. All it will take is one of us pool nuts winning the lottery, and then it's on like a Romney Tax Return and a Ron Paul Pat Down.

It's easier to find a table for sure. Different yes. Try it for a day/night. New place is not as dumpy. Although dumpy has its charm. :)

.

I have been to the Ex a few years before it closed and the Horseshoe both once.

The Ex had some old charm but it was a dump and the parking was bad.

The Horseshoe has better parking but the walk is long from the rooms. The casino kind of eliminates a lot of pool gaming. I like the no smoking policy and the seating arrangement for viewing the matches.

Looking at the brackets it appears as if the participation by the pros is decreasing, unless they are only planning on playing in 9 Ball but they use to play in all.

IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE"!!!!! Only 3 mini's all single elimination,banks,1 hole and 9ball.The cost of room and entry fee's will eat you up and so will thew food.

It's not even remotely close. The Executive West was at least 10 times better in my opinion. Now I'm sure Diamond (Greg Sullivan) likes it much better at the casino.

I don't really see the need in comparing the two.....I mean, the further away we get from the EW days, the better we are going to remember them anyway. Remember that girl that drove you absolutely CRAZY when you dated her. Right after you broke up, it was like, GOOD RIDDANCE!!! But after dating the younger, sexier, higher maintenance one, you start forgetting what a pain the old one was, and start longing for those days again. They both have their pros and cons. Personally, I'll take newer and cleaner with food a bit too high priced over old, dirty, and dank, with even WORSE quality yet cheaper food, any day.

My advice to most of the complainers - get a Garmin (within 20 miles of the casino there's every type of food you could want - convenient? no, but available, and not that much of a pain). Secondly, Coleman and Igloo make these things that you can put food and beverages in, if you feel $2.50 for a beverage is gonna break you. Lastly, and this is the one I always laugh at....the casino; I doubt it's taking away a bunch of action....I've been 3 straight years, and have not seen the casino yet. Matching up in pool, or sweating matches is MUCH more likely to have a better return on your money over the casino (and I think most know this).

Very different.....

Copied from another DCC thread in the main forum....

I heard this a while back as well, but I also heard it may eventually be every three or four months (this is referring to multople events like the DCC in the future). That sounds great but how many "pool players" can afford weeks on end at a hotel, especially a casino hotel. Its not like Vegas where the rooms are basically given away just to get people in the doors. I went to Vegas a few years ago for 9 days and it was $450 to $500 for my ticket...both ways and the room, at the Riviera. Granted, there are probably very few options for the tournament location ever since the Executive ousted it but there are always ways to accomodate the DCC patrons a little better, cost wise. Its pretty strong when you are stuck $1100 as soon as you walk in the door and thats got nothing to do with the actual casino.... I have been to at least the last 7 or 8 DCC tournaments and most were for the entire time and this is probably the last time I will go for the duration. Its almost to the point where you need a CPA following you around to keep track of everything, like $9 cashews, $4 bottle waters, $10-$25 internet, $2.25 can soda...and the list goes waaaaay on.

Its no secret that these types of places are soley looking to make as much money as possible but the line must be dranw somewhere. I have eaten at the buffet at least once or twice every year and have never been impressed, with a minor exception to the breakfast one. If I were Paula Dean I would seriously think twice about plastering my face and name all over in a place like that, lol. We have also went to Legands, Binions and all the other places there and Binions is by far the best option on the premises, if you dont mind the price. We ate at Binions twice this past time and I had no complaints either time. The second time they said we neded a reservation even though there were many empty tables so we set at the bar, which is fine as long as you like cigarette smoke with your steak. Why there is no law that prohibits smoking around dining is an absolute joke. The buffet was terrible and definetly not worth the $20+ cost. Both times we ate at Legands were nothing to speak of and neither was the Asian joint. We ate there the first or second night and over $90 for three people is out of line. Its almost as bad as the $7 breakfast sandwhich or $6 chicken salad sandwich on the boat and at the cafe by the front desk. The ice cream place is good and $5 for two scoops of sorbet was the only thing I thought I got my moneys worth out of. Its pretty bad when the staff talk about how much of a hijack the place is and other than work they spend no time or money there.

For those who have never attended the DCC at the new location here is a small list of the expenses we incurred. This is for two people and is a pretty close estimate.

Room = $1100
Buffet once = $50
Legands twice = $70
Asian restaurant once = $50
Binions twice = $180 to $200
Food on boat and cafe = $50
Drinks = $100 minimum (Beer = $3.50, can pop = $2.25, water = $1.50)
Thats roughly $1600 for two people for the 7 days were were there and thats not including probably at least another $100 in table tokens.

Taking a small fridge and a few groceries probably saved us at least $200 total. As for the actual tournament, I didnt hear any complaints on the event. On a side note, multiple outlets in our room didnt work and there was a vast amount of mold in the window ledge inside the room. If anyone would like to see this I took a pic with my phone...

Went to the derby from 02 to 08 at ew and have no interests to go back until it is moved back to the old venue. Like the fact hallways had all the cues for sale and other billiard items to choose from!

Review and Ccomparison of the Old Derby City to the New

My friend and I felt the same way. This was the first year that we decided we would go and give it a try. Our opinion on the changes are mixed, but I decided to publish an article with all of the information and photographs that we obtained to help newbies and folks like us decide if they want to give the DCC another try. The article is long and with photos, but I think it will answer questions that no one else will ask. Please give it a read and let me know if I can add anything else that will be helpful to others attending in the future.
