Hello, I'm writing from italy for a friend of mine who aske me if it was possible to have built a shaft with a 13mm tip and hollow for the whole length with a hollow diameter of 4mm.. since I don't know the answer and don't why he asked me this, could you please tell me what you think bout this thing... Thanks to everyone :) :)

IMO, building shafts that stay straight is one of the biggest challenges in cuebuilding. I would think that by removing this core from the shaft, it would only make the wood more unstable and prone to warpage. Plus, you'd need one heck of a long bit to bore out the entire length of a 29" or longer shaft. I'm interested in what other cuemakers have to say on this subject.

easy enough

Easy enough to do with a laminated shaft. Doubt that it is worth the effort though.

You would need a "gun drill" for that sort of bore; and one that is 29" long and 4mm in diameter would be an exotic and costly beast, if one even exists. A 4mm bit couldn't possibly stay rigid over that length, and you'd have a hard time keeping it from clogging with chips and overheating.

It sounds like a very tall order, for little payoff.

hollow shaft

Tell your friend that OB-1 shafts are made in this manner and that they are refilled with a foam to reduce noise. They play very well and have the same reduced deflection traits that a Predator shaft does but they actually feel better than a Predator...of course that last part is my opinion.
Good Luck,
Mike

Gun bore bits run pretty true and start at .125" and up to 48" lengths as standard. .22 caliber isn't much bigger than 5mm. After saying this though, I must agree that it sounds like a lot of work and expense for little return.

In hearing what your friend feels the benefit of doing something like this would be.
It has been already done by a company in Japan(I believe.....been a long while ago since I see it.) Although they didn't leave it hollow......I'm remembering that it was filled with carbon fiber......I believe. Maybe it was China..........getting old and CRS is getting worse.
