Conflicting reports regarding BB

Maybe you haven't been around pro players much. Or you haven't noticed the "issues" they have with the rules. I've seen a lot of pro players and I'd be willing to bet that fewer than 1 in 10 of the current crop has ever read the rules. And that's for the standard games, not BB.

Yeah for sure and quite a few times i've seen regular players during a dispute go to a pro for clarification on some semi difficult rule and its probably 70% minimum the pro gets it wrong.

Jam, All I can say is, you are really out of the loop, regarding the rules of eight ball...For one thing, they have become much more consistant, as the larger leagues have progressed...And for another, they are now almost 'set in stone' when it comes to the professional presentation of the game !

Also, even if you are playing "Half-Drunk Elmer" in a $$$ match after league play, you will both know enough about the rules, to talk over how you want to play ! This has come about, because 8-ball has been the most played game, and has been around FOREVER..

Bonus Ball, is twice as confusing (rule wise) and even if the game EVER reaches ANY level of popularity, (highly doubtful)...it will be well into the next century, before the general public BEGINS to understand the game. We don't have that long, to try and
save pool, from complete abandonment..To compare the two games is..er, um, well, (I won't say stupid) but I will say..............
.....GROSSLY MIS-INFORMED ! :embarrassed2:

SJD---Retired, but not retarded !

if i was going to sell pool to the masses, not the pool world, i'd be selling 8 ball 24/7/365 period.

its like selling hotdogs, it just works.

I guess it never occurred to anyone in the US that maybe there should be one set of rules that everyone plays by rather than 1,000 little variations.

there will always be 1000 variations to the rules, the lesser the player the more rules they seem to have. thats widely known. standardized rules aint going to happen in pool ever. standardization is a American dream, dont happen anywhere with anything. only the people who never travelled beyond 100 miles from where they are born think everything is the same.

Well, come on up to Maryland and step foot in my neighborhood tavern and play yourself some 8-ball. When you play a safety on your opponent, because you got out of line, leaving yourself with no shot, be sure that you are not only wearing a helmet for protection, but wear sneakers, so that you can make a quick exit out the front door before you get pummeled to the ground.

Just went over the rules!!

Here is one that can be confusing.

The following standardized billiard rules apply, all of which are considered fouls:

5.5.2 The cue ball does not contact a cushion after contacting an object ball.

So no stop shots are allowed?

Don

"Pool" in "taverns" may look like pool but it isn't.

Depends on where you shoot! I'm a Dietle alumni. Best bar players in the State of Maryland came out of Dietle's. :)

LOL....thats how it in the pubs i grew up playing 8 ball in... you didn't dare play safe unless you were looking for a fight.

Jam, You totally missed the point (not unusual)...Fights come about in bar's, over whose quarter is up !...Do you really see that happening in one of Mark or Greg's tournaments, or even the BB arena...Try and make your arguments, just slightly
fit the subject at hand !.... I thought we were talking, (at least most of us were) about pool at the PRO LEVEL ! :sorry:

PS..I have been around pool, long enough to know, "When in Rome, do as the Roman's".......That may be why I'm still around, ya think ? (and, I've NEVER worn a helmet !)

Dick, you continue to demean women. Please don't post or quote me on this forum anymore. Thank you. :)

There are far more taverns and bars with pool tables than pool halls. Many a player cut their teeth on a bar table. For many, a pool hall is simply not an option. So to make a blanket statement like that is just wrong. In my neck o' the woods, we have some extremely strong players, who are fully aware of the rules.....and nary a pool hall in sight. Safety play here is prevelent.

Totally unfair, and untrue...You have taken that position before, when you are not getting the best of an argument...
It's called FRUSTRATION, and it is a very "COED" condition..It is not my fault, more women, than men, choose to make
a carreer out of it !...Yes I'm still around, and yes I'll leave you alone !

Don't you get it? It's the players fault if "Bonus Ball" fails. It's in the rules.

Actually, they have a big part in it and they damn well should try their hardest to get it to the masses, because it's in their best interest.

This is how much these players LOVE bonus ball.

None of them knew the damn rules. They were suppose to start in November, they were in Vegas and being paid at the time. Now if this game is so good, why do they not know the rules with 6 months of practice time?

I guess they are just saying what they are paid to say, none of these clowns really like this game. I know of 3 of them playing in the same room as I during those months. Not once did I ever witness them practicing this game.

This is another perfect example of why many "professional" pool players get the (lack of) respect that they deserve. They're given a freakin job for free and they still don't do squat but sit around and collect a paycheck. Go figure.

"Pool" in "taverns" may look like pool but it isn't.

Ok, I've had about enough. What are you offering, with your 9' shimmed Diamond, the 7? The 8? I'm beginning to think you're not just a mediocre player, but a pool snob("my table's better, so I am too", "my cue's better, so I am too" blah blah blah). Video or you're all talk. If you're ever in PDX, come whoop up on me on these too-easy Valleys in the tavern I play at. Let's see you 2-1 somebody that doesn't safe up 4 shots in a row to start out a rack.

Now we're talking turkey. Love that kind of colloquy!

Look, you, I have taken your word bombs in the past and just ducked them.

I can't, and don't, want to engage in a negative back-and-forth.

With your veiled insults, such as it not being unusual that I miss the point, that's about as welcoming as a dog humping on my leg.

With all due accord, I do have respect for seniors, and that includes you. I give you latitude in this regard. As such, I would never do anything to demean you in any way on this public pool forum out of a sincere respect to an aged member.

John Lenon?
Give Peace A Chance.

I guess we all know how well that worked out for him. Kind of ironic in the end.

Jam,

Would a simple "I'm sorry" suffice for you, or do you want me to grovel ?..I thought we were just aguing differernt points
of view, on a pool subject... I did NOT insult you based on your color, race or gender, in fact I did not think I insulted you
at all !...Other than maybe proving my point in the pool argument. (which you seem to consider the same thing)

Nevertheless, I shall offer my sincere apology for upsetting you !

"Old Guy Dick"<---Am I really older than Keith ?..

PS..Not to upset you again, but, I can't help but be reminded of the immortal words of Tom Hanks..."Hey,..Theres no
crying in baseball" !!!...
