This will be a great Derby City Classic in 2011. Allen Hopkins will be inducted into the 1 Pocket Hall Of Fame. This is a great honor IMO for any player to be recognized by the people that love the game. Allen is still a great player, promoter, and plays most every day from what I hear. I'm sure there will be MANY good stories told at the dinner! :)

I am most definately going to try to get to the Derby this year for my first time!

Congrats to Allen, definitely one of the best One Pocket players of his generation. One of the few players who would play Efren "even" at his peak. In fact the only one who I remember playing Efren even-up One Pocket for at least fifteen years. Everyone else asked for weight from Efren. And they got it. Efren refused to give Allen a ball! For good reason I might add.

Damn Jay, I didn't know that! I guess there are only a few people in the world that can say they play Efren EVEN one Pocket.

Actually.....aren't Efren AND Allen both going to be at the Derby? hmmm :D

what a re-match that would be!

Congratulations Allen!

If you would like to join Allen Hopkins for his induction, advance reservations for the One Pocket Hall of Fame dinner are available on line. The date is Tuesday night, January 26th, right during the middle of the Derby City Classic. This is always a fun event, loaded with legendary players. 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the very first Johnston City tournament, so we are planning a Johnston City theme and making extra effort to get as many of the key surviving players from those early years there at the dinner.

Hopkins was the New Jersey State Straight Pool champion back in the 60's -- maybe he was still a teenager -- a heck of a feat given the strong tradition of Straight Pool there, and this was when the game of 14.1 still ruled!

Congratulations to Allen! He was already a legendary One Pocket player when I took up the game seriously in the early '70s.
