Congratulations Shane-world pool masters champ

Once again, I'll mention that since Shane himself has admitted he's not won a world championship, that shows the value of that supposed "world championship"

In his words from Sunday.....
It is an honour to win the World Pool Masters, this is one of the greatest days in my career,” said an emotional Van Boening after he took a standing ovation from the crowd.

“It means a lot to me to win this tournament. I have been playing well over the last six months. Whenever I had a shot I took it down, I only made a couple of mistakes in the last couple of matches.

“I have been trying to win overseas and I have got to the finals of a couple of tournaments, and won the World Cup of Pool in 2008. It has been a battle for the last few years so I am really happy to win today.

Doesn't sound like a guy who would agree with you. He is not just a world champion. He is a world pool master.

It's simply not that hard to understand you either have won one or you haven't
Plain and simple ,

Plain and simple. In 2014, Feijen is the World Champion. Plain and simple.

Maybe you can give us a plain and simple explanation of the state of the world championships from 2007 to 2009 for our simple minds. Shane won the 2007 Predator World 10-ball Championships, but people say he has not won a world championship. Shane won the 2014 World Pool Masters, but people say he has not won any world titles. Some simple fans are a little confused by this. Can you enlighten us with a plain and simple explanation?

There was no world championship in 2008 and 2009. Asking who the 2008 world 9-ball champion is is like asking who were the Olympic medalists of 1940. There aren't any.

The predator event was not an official world championship. It's like when Kevin Trudeau had Mike Sigel play Loree Jon Jones and called that match the "World 8-ball Championship". It's meaningless.

Shane has won a lot of tournaments. No world championships yet. Yes, it is simple.

Who was the world Champion in 1999?

Is that the year they had two events? In that case there were two world champions that year.

lmao, yes, two different organizations had world 9-ball championships and Nick Varner won one of them and Efren Reyes won the other. Both are credited with winning the '99 World Championship for some reason. If this is the criteria that we are to go by then the '07 World 10-Ball Championship should be recognized as well since it was the only World 10-Ball Championship that year with WPA rules and sanctioned by the UPA. The next year the WPA started a separate World 10-Ball Championship. So given these circumstances, which were exactly like the '99 9-Ball World Championship, it stands to reason that Shane was the '07 World 10-Ball Champion.

But, all of you ass clowns will scream that it isn't the same and Shane hasn't won a world championship, blah, blah, blah. Rinse repeat

WPA recognizes both Varner and Reyes as 1999 world champs. It doesn't recognize Shane for the Predator event. It also doesn't recognize Mike Sigel's victory over Loree Jon Jones.

And do you believe that the WPA was seen as the true governing body of pool in 2007 to 2009? Here is what the pros thought of the WPA in 2008 ... take specific note of what Shane, Robles, and others had to say at that time ... http://www.upatour.com/upa-takes-stand-against-world-pool-billiard-association/

By the way ... I thought you guys said this was "plain and simple".

It is plain and simple. The WPA is and has been the international governing body of pool. It doesn't really matter if some American players are or were upset with it at some time in the past.

Yea .. the 2007 event that had a bunch of shortstops and APA 5s in it ... Pagulayan, Bustamante, Orcollo, Kiamco, Hohmann, Archer, Corteza. Not to be confused with that stellar field at the 2008 and 2009 WPA World Championships.

Could you tell me, plain and simply, who were the sanctioning bodies when the following won their World Championships?

Buddy Hall
Mike Sigel
Willie Mosconi
Jim Rempe
Grady Matthews
Steve Mizerak

We've been talking World Champions before the WPA was ever in existence. I know, some of you believe 10-ball was started in 2005, and World Championships started in 1999.

I don't disagree with the value of the WPA and its sanctioning, but to not consider Shane Van Boening a World Champion opens a crazy question about this list.

Freddie <~~~ not a contender

Hey Fred- Gotta disagree here.

Im assuming no one sanctioned them-certainly no one on a world level. The USA was the World as far as pool goes back then. They ARE questionable really but there was no standard at the time. A standard that doesn't exist cannot be met.

Now it is different, there is a sanctioning body-one with clear standards and rules as to how one can put on a World Championship. This is good. We dont need street corner World Championships like the ones we held in our backyard as 9 year olds in Stickball.

SVB very well may be the best player on earth-maybe the best ever but he hasn't won a WPC. When he does, it will be very clear to all. No debates needed.

Good post, Freddie. A case can be made that although he lacks a WPA sanctioned world championship, Shane is world champion, not because of the WPM but because of his Master of the Table titles at Derby City.

Winners at Johnston City were, by some, deemed World Champios, so why can't we think of Derby City champions the same way?

This is never an easy topic.

Maybe the lower case lettering is the key?

Or, we can say that Shane isn't a WPA World Champion. I like that simply enough.

To further this, many consider the Derby City Bank Pool Champion as the "World Bank Pool Champion." Maybe it should be "world champion of Banks" or something?

I remember seeing the list of World Championships that Loree Jon Jones won. It included the BC World 9-ball Open. Eyebrows a-raising.

I"m not sure what part of my post you're disagreeing with, Dave.

Calling someone a world bank pool champion is like calling the NFL Super Bowl champs a world champion. If the game is played little to not at all outside of one country, it's meaningless. Same foes foe one pocket.
