what makes a cue a conversion?? I have never heard the technical answer to this question and didnt have a clue how to answer it tonight!!
I always thought it was a housecue converted to a jointed cue with a few bells/whistles added!but,it doesnt seem to be that at all looking at all the cues posted as conversions

The Key differences in a conversion To me, is that It's not just a house cue cut in half with a pin added, but has the makers personal tapers used on the cue. He may add other elements to make it more sporty, a butt sleeve, rings, wrap, inlays whatever, but it basically was converted from another cue or as more often, a housecue. Possible I got it wrong, but that's what I think of when the term is used.

I'm not sure if anyone else does this, but If I even build one from a new blank that is not My own, I sometimes may call that a conversion, so there's no mistaking it for an all original.:) Greg

I think a conversion cue is any cue that was made from a Blank or another cue not made by the person building / assembling the cue. So I suppose you could say, most known cues made by Herman Rambo, to my knowledge all cues made by George Balabushka, and many cues made by other famous cue makers are conversion cues. Wow, that was a mouth full:eek: :D

I have a slightly different take...I consider a "conversion" as a jointed cue made from a house cue or house cue blank. I do not consider using a fullsplice blank, say from Prather, as a conversion.

Conversion, like sneaky pete, or plain jane, means dif things
to dif people - to the point that the meaning can get blured.
As with so many things cuewise - there is no technical definition.

What is there about the cues that are other than housecues that
caused you to wonder?

Most people mean a cue made from a housecue and/or blank.
Conversion is also applied to cues that started out as a Hoppe.

Myself, I would not consider anything made from anything
other than a playable cue to be a "conversion" - but others
probably do.

exactly...JER

To convert something you are changing it from one thing into another. So using a point blank of any type is not a conversion, because you are using is for its intended purpose. To take a one piece cue and convert it into a two piece cue would be a true conversion. Some conversions are just installing a joint. But most trash the shaft end of the one piece cue, make a new shaft, retaper the butt to modern cue dimensions and add rings and such to customize it a little more. I rarely convert cues, but am not opposed to doing so or using a butt blank.
