Is he in some type of slump or something? He seems to have been playing poorly in recent tournaments. He lost to John Gabriel (never heard of him- is he a solid pro talent player?) in the first round

First, John Gabriel is capable of beating anyone on any given day. He is a world class pool player.

As to the action. Players at this level don't match up too often. Usually, because they are too well known, they have to give up such a big spot that they are at a disadvantage. They are really stuck n a tough spot.

Corey came back to win his losers side match 8-7. I can't believe Donnie Mills went 2 and out. That's a long way to travel to only play 2 matches.

John Gabriel is up on Alex Pagulayan now.

He beat him 8-4. This guy Gabriel must be a very good player

I just noticed in the brackets that Roger Griffis is playing- haven't heard from him in forever

Roger Griffis used to be a great player. What happened to him and what made him come out of retirement? I watched him run rack after rack after rack in vegas back in 99 in some big 8 ball tournament they held at the riviera.

Gabriel

John Gabriel, years ago, used to be the 'House Pro' at Magoos in Tulsa.
He plays real good, and I lost a tournament match to him there one weekend. He made 3 terrific jump shots on me during the match.

Stevie just knocked Roger G out of the tournament. Now he's playing Thorston on one of the Ustream tables. :)

In Dec at the M-cup and around that time he was playing the best pool I ever saw him play, he even said he was playing real good and was happy with his game. He is busy with organizing tournaments is what I understand he is doing. I aint worried about his game.

I have known a lot of top players and they all have one thing in common. They reach a point where doing all that practice that got them where they are they just can't do it anymore. They still show up at the tournaments and play and just see what happens. They may get a resurgence of interest and go nuts for a while but at a point playing pool just seems futile. All that practice and for what. That's just the way it is. Every pro I have known has become like that. When it happens they have a hard time beating young blood thirsty players who would rather play then eat. If you ask any of the older top players you run into how much they practice you might hear them say, none.

I know piles of pro's old and young more than half practice, they might not admit it in public. Hell just like in the hustler "you play pool mister?" ; "Now and then you know how it is." Thats whats really going on, dont believe everything you hear, believe what you know.

respectfully,

Eric:)

Maybe, but there is certainly a difference. They may get on the table and sort of practice but can launch off into a conversation on sports or something with anyone sitting around at the drop of a hat. Nothing like that fanatical playing of the game when they were young. It isn't really realistic to expect it of them. I used to go to a lot of tournaments and it was common to see players like Hall or Reid or any one of a list of top players sitting around at 2 in the morning bs'ing when they had to get up in the morning and play. Or playing golf in the afternoon and show up just in time for their matches.

They seem to reach a point in their lives where they don't care anymore. They show up play on automatic pilot from years of playing and just see what happens. Their great skills can usually carry them often in spite of themselves, but they sometimes they don't and they lose to a local yokel. I think one day they just wake up and realize pool is just an unrewarding low paying job with few if any benefits they are stuck doing.
