I saw on the front page of AZB that renowned pro player Corey Deuel has announced the formation of the "Universal Pool League", which will host an invitational 8 ball tournament in November 2009.

It's great to see another pro player step up and try to make something happen in pool. Corey is to be applauded for taking this giant step at such a young age!

I hope this really blossums and Corey becomes another Allen Hopkins, ie, great champion who had ideas on how to better pool and instead of just grousing or complaining, he acted on them. And look at Allen's "Super Billiard Expo" now!

Good luck Corey!

Here's a link to Corey's site......http://www.universalpooleague.com/

Other info is on AZB's front page.

Well if any player has ideas it's corey dueul. I would venture to say the smartest player ever. They always talk about high runs, big breaks, most trophies, etc. But this guy is genius.

I wish Corey Deuel luck, but honestly how many pool leagues do we need, or fight over players.

CC,

I definitely don't think we in America are inundated with too many pool tournaments. I'm speaking of pro tournamnets. So, if a guy like Corey wants to start another "league" or system that helps grow pool and maybe even acts like a minor league system to the pro level, I'm all for it and behind him 100%. I hope this spawns a whole slew of new players who fall in love with our great sport.

I remember reading that Pres. Roosevelt wanted a "chicken in every pot."
I'd like a tournament on the scale that the PGA has every weekend for pro pool players. Big purse, TV coverage, great media attention, every weekend. Maybe this is part of that vision.

BigDaddy,
Personally, I think Corey has creativity on par with or at least near that of Efren. They both come up with really amazing ideas on the table.

I don't get it......

I just looked in the AZ pool Paper, we got 7 different Pool Leagues in the State.
Do you even play or love the game of pool? I fail to understand how any venture that might possibly expose new players to this wonderful game, or allow those of us that are already hooked a new venue to compete in, could possibly bother you. As previously stated, Corey is argueably the most creative player to ever pick up a cue. If his on-table creativity and attention to detail show up at all in his business sense/plan then any venture he endeavors to produce might just be the next big thing, something this game could definately use. Here's to hoping Corey is as great off the table as he is on.

How many of them do you play in?

It begs the question - Will there ever be the perfect amount of pool leagues? Go ahead Bruce start a thread on it.

Actually, I could use at least one more, two if you count one for 8 ball and one for 9 ball. Although APA Master's comes close, it combines them.

I would like to see a BCA type system (rules, handicapping system team vs. player and stronger players) where they play races against one person instead of playing each player from the other team one game each.

I would like to see a nine-ball league set up like this but would probably play 8 ball as well. Maybe this already exists, but I am not aware of it. Until I get that I guess APA Masters will have to do.

I'm a little bit surprised to see this new league. It sounds a bit like the new League of Champions which was just started by the UPA. I would have thought he would have put his efforts into supporting the UPA league, since he is a member of the UPA.

Just an observation, I'm not being critical.

This has actually been in the works for some time now. I wish Corey Deuel and Tony Crosby the best of luck with this!

It's so great to see pro players really jump in and do something like this :)

In my opinion, Corey's efforts deserve support. He is putting his money where his mouth is and he has no real reason to do this except to make a nice tournament for both pros and amateurs to enjoy. His added money figure is larger than most. He could have put some of that in his pocket and still drawn a stellar field. But he didn't, he threw it in the pot. I don't know what his business plan is but I hope he manages to make a buck on this so he can do it again. You have my applause, Mr. Deuel.

New ideas are good for pool

I hope Cory's new league goes over, sounds like he has some ideas that may get more people in pool league, league's do breed involvement, and if you can get enough people showing support , your on the right track to make pool better, for us all.

With pool all over the internet now(real time), more and more people are getting a chance to see that pool has a following and can turn into something big, and I hope it does, if we get new players taking up the game, that means more business and sales, and that will = sponsorships for the league and the players.

This economy will turn around sooner or later, but it will, so who ever has a foot in the door in the pool world ( and I think leagues are (A) the doorway) will be the ones to make it good for the game.

The Universal Pool League is not new, it has been going on here in the tampa/spring hill/new port richey area for some time now and is doing pretty good!
